This has also happened to us before. Murphy's hackles go up and he goes behind me. Such a guard dog...LOL.

It sounds like a few Labs are as clueless as Maxx, that is good to know. Maxx really just has a very sweet personality, his tail never stops and he greets every situation as if it is the best adventure in the world, every person as a long lost friend and every dog as a best friend. He has no fear and sometimes it worries me but he really is just the best dog I have ever shared my life with.

Kain's a big lover he probably would have knocked me down to go say hi if the dog looked friendly

If the dog was friendly, Zoey would be fine. She would get aggressive quick if she felt threatened though. Daisee my corgi would react badly, she tolerates other dogs because she knows better but I know she dislikes them

Charlie was probably just being a little protective and territorial

Mine run behind me. We had an aggressive Lab in the neighborhood years ago. Her owners didn't pay any attention. She would run up on us growling and snapping and Argos and Nikki would get behind me so fast, I would almost fall down. Zo has no boundaries so she would say hello without reservation and wind up getting whatever the other dog dished out. That's happened before as well. I had to drag the other dog off.

Koukla would melt into the floor and Rocko would more than likely bite. He's extremely leash reactive, even with dogs that he knows well. I usually just have to unhook him and he is fine. Weird animal.

It rarely happens around here, but I have no doubt that my Charlie would not like it.

Java and Moka tend to get a little defensive if they are on leash and are approached by an off leash dogs.
They've had some bad experiences with it. Both have been attacked a couple of times by off leash dogs when they were on leash.
Java will lower her head and growl a bit and Moka will actually snap at the dog a little to tell them to back off and get out of her space.

When they're off leash they are best friends with everyone and have no problem with off leash dogs approaching them.

Ram wouldn't have any issues as long as the dog is approaching in a friendly manner. If he's unsure, his hackles will go up until he gets a read on the dog.
