    What size ex pen?

I need to bite the bullet and get one. I'm looking at the Midwest exercise pen on Amazon. Do I want the 36", 42" or 48"? Thanks!

Get the 36, the bigger ones are unwieldy, and too tall. :-)

Perhaps for a puppy, but we have a 48 inch one that has been useful for containing older dogs when needed who could have easily jumped the 36 inch one. We actually have several in different sizes.

For an adult Lab, I would have gone for the 48", too. I'd definitely put a wooden frame around the base regardless of the height you get.

I had a 48" that I gave away because it was HUGE. LOL

The expens are not very large in area, so unless they can jump straight up and over from a standing or sitting position, (and I had an adult one that could) it is unlikely a young puppy would clear it. I use 36" expens for youngsters at shows.
My outdoor puppy pens are the Courtyard Kennel panels, and they are 38" high and I haven't ever experienced puppies, youngsters or adults going over it. Amazon.com : Precision Pet Courtyard Kennel Silver Crackle : Precision Pet Products : Pet Supplies

Definitely depends on the dog - most of mine would be fine with 36 inches even as adults, but Cookie was jumping out of the 36 inch one from around 5 months old. She’s a jumping fool though, and most Labs wouldn’t be able to do that. At less than a year old she was jumping the slightly over 4 foot fence in our yard.

You also have to consider when blocking in a puppy, you may need to reach over and in. 36" is best.

For a new puppy I get it, but I see a post here "for an adult lab I'd get a", what are you doing with these things? 16 sq ft of area for a big dog? that's a 4'x4' area... may as well use a crate.
Rocco decided he needed exercise today, ran across the wheat field, then the bean field and wound up at the neighbor a 1/2 mile down the road.
