So Archie is not thrilled about his new little brother

Normal, right? He is mostly tolerant, but this morning Ferris tried to lay down right next to him. Archie did one quick, low growl and Ferris moved. I feel bad for Ferris, but I didn't correct Archie. Should I have?

We are making sure Archie has puppy-free zones (via baby gates), and Archie still gets solo daily walks. -img_7448-jpg

I'm hoping that in a few weeks they will be buddies. Here's Ferris this morning -- yes, he has tired eyes because he woke me up three times last night. Yawn. (And one of those times was a total fake-out, little stinker!)

Well you know what we say, you don't correct growls. You try to find out the cause of the growl and fix that. Really, I don't think that's a big deal at all. Archie didn't feel like being cosy, Ferris got the message and moved, I see an example of good doggy communications both directions. I don't think there is a concern and I think there's nothing to fix.

I am so sorry Archie is not feeling the love. We are blessed with Mocha who is loving his pesky little sister. We are giving him extra attention and a few more treats!

Normal. Puppies are annoying and have mouths full of sharp teeth that they generally won't hesitate to use on littermates/housemates. Archie will have to set boundaries, and it sounds like that's happening. They might become best friends, they might just tolerate each other. Still early days. Not all dogs who live together will become BFFs and snuggle buddies. That's normal.

Chase really did not care for Lark for quite a while. If he growled, I didn't correct but if he growled, that was super infrequent. Mostly, he kept as far away from her as he could. Even now, they don't snuggle together but Chase will tolerate Lark lying in close proximity and they play fight and bitey face together frequently, initiated by either of them. It took months for Chase to act like he didn't want us to send her back to the factory, no replacement needed. He's 6 years older than she is so he had 6 years of being an only child to get over.

I suspect that growl is language Ferris understands anyway, obviously he got up and moved as he was instructed by Archie. He will learn what Archie will tolerate and as Archie gets accustomed to Ferris, he'll probably tolerate more and more. I wouldn't leave the together unsupervised but it should gradually improve. Sounds like you're doing well recognizing Archie needs some time alone and time alone with you.

I have had it both ways. Some of my adults loved pups and one hated them. She would growl if they got within 2 feet. I always watch to make sure every thing is safe, but let the big dogs know I am on their side.

It can take a while for them to warm up.

My standard response to the older grumps in such a situation is "Oh give him a break, you were once a pain in the butt too!". IOW, I don't discipline per se, but will say things in a tone that they understand that they are making something out of nothing. Get over it, IOW!
