Hope your friend's dog is okay. Bites can get infected very easily. Glad it wasn't worse. The biter should be spayed, and never bred. The #1 thing that a Labrador should have is a good, stable, friendly temperament. I don't care how handsome a dog is, or how amazing a hunting dog. If your Lab is shy, aggressive, basically anything but friendly and stable, those genes don't need to be passed on. These were dogs that were bred to accompany hunters and dogs they've never met before and sit quietly together without incident in blinds, boats, etc. There's no place in breeding programs, show or field, for dogs with poor dispositions. Poor disposition and no clearances. That's going to be a winning combo (eye roll). Bet the biter is a real looker too...would love to have one like that at my house (NOOOOO!).

I know from personal experience how scary that is! Cookie had just a small teeth puncture wound and the next day the node on his throat was of the size of a small egg. Of course I thought the worst and was relieved it was just a bacterial infection. A couple of days on antibiotics solved the issue. Bibi will be fine.

My thoughts exactly. When we first met them in the early hours of the morning, they quickly said that their dog was not spayed. I then politely asked, is she in heat, or close to a cycle? My dog is an intact male. She scoffs and says "we would never bring a dog in heat out hunting, do you think we are idiots?!" In hind sight, yes, yes I do think you are idiots! She started talking about how she got her lab (bragging that she got breeding rights and that she paid $300 for a "quality hunting and breeding lab"). I asked about the dog's lineage. She didn't know much besides, her mom was a chocolate and her dad was a yellow. I then asked, did they have any titles? Hunting, obedience, etc? No. Just normal good dogs. OK. Did they have hip clearances? Eye and heart? Elbows? What are those?? (As I scream internally) You need to get tests from OFA for hips and elbows before you breed, and also test for genetic issues with eyes and heart. "Oh don't worry, we had our vet check her out (which is a vet at petsmart) and she said she is all good."

The absolute kicker for me was when they saw how great Bacon was, they started asking about our breeder. That is when I got to list the tests, the titles, and the long line of hunting champions that Bacon comes from. That our breeder does limited litters. That she does all of the testing and has devoted her life to her dogs. Then, here is the biggest one. "Have you ever considered breeding him?? We would love to use him as our stud"

IM SORRY WHAT?!?!??!?!?! You think I would breed my lab who has an excellent temperament, excellent breeding, and is from a breeding that had all the proper clearances with your dog?! I just chuckled and said, no, we are not planning to breed, he has limited registration.

This dog was the opposite of every lab I have ever met. It made me sad that they are wishing to breed her. She is extremely energetic, poorly trained, aggressive, has resource guarding problems, and has poor hunting instincts. This dog will retrieve decoys when you are throwing them out into the spread.

Poor Bibi I hope she heals quickly and that this episode doesn't take away her pleasure with hunting. Are they going to take responsibility for Bibi's medical bills?

Wonder too if there is anyway you or Bibi's dad could get the other couples AKC information at least their dogs name and turn them in, can that even be done? I am sitting here chuckling to myself that even if you could and did AKC probably wouldn't do anything about it anyway.

I asked them about that when they called last night, they are being a little hesitant to ask, seeing as when they informed them that their dog had bitten Bibi and caused an infection they didn't really care. Thankfully they have pet insurance.

The AKC is just a registry - they wouldn’t/couldn’t get involved unless there was a question as to whether or not the dog was a purebred. Temperament is out of their purview. Now if the attack had happened at an AKC sanctioned event, there’s a possibility (small) that the dog could be banned from participating in the future, but something like this is not something they would have any interest/ability to deal with.
