Thank you! Yes she is healing. It's just hard missing all of our group hikes and not taking her on walks with me.

Good call on going to an ortho vet. I did xrays on Tux a few years back and had a regular vet telling me he had severe HD and that I shouldn't be walking him for an hour at a time anymore. I asked for an ortho consult and the ortho vet said his hips weren't perfect but they were in darn good shape, and pretty much don't worry about it.

A friend of mine has an ACD who was diagnosed with a strained iliopsoas muscle earlier this year. She had a hard time getting it diagnosed, did the xrays and all. At one point her vet was so convinced it must be an ACL tear based on the limping that he wanted to go ahead and open her up for surgery. Luckily she got a second opinion, and started a rehab program with exercises and underwater treadmill. Her dog is doing much better now.

Mulder had an iliopsoas muscle injury at one point. It took 6 months before we had him back to complete activity (including jumping in Obedience).

The vet was probably referring to PennHip (as previously mentioned). I wouldn’t say that OFA ratings are meaningless, but they are much more subjective. PennHip is slowly becoming more common but requires more training as to positioning etc (according to a vet friend who got certified to do it) so can be harder to find. No matter which rating system you use though, there are no guarantees ... it’s about risk reduction not elimination. Two parents with perfect hips could still produce dysplasia - they are just less likely to.

The ortho vet did mention rehab and laser therapy as an option but it all sounded kind of extreme. Also I don't know what kind of cost that entails or if pet plan would cover it. He said rest and the meds will help. Aric came with me at the appointment and got called Daisy's "Daddy" ❤️

Petplan would definitely cover rehab and laser therapy if you do decide to go that route. I forgot to mention my friend did the laser therapy as well, along with the rehab for her dog. I think she had to go somewhat frequently to the vet (like at least weekly) in the beginning for laser and rehab. But she was also given exercises and things to do at home. And she also had to rest for awhile and also had meds. It was a long recovery process, there were a few months where she couldn't do any off leash hiking and running with her dog, and even now she keeps a close eye on it and will give tramadol and rest if she appears painful.

    Ah, so sorry Daisy!

From personal experience with an iliopsoas injury, it hurts like he!! and does take time to heal. Definitely found therapy to be helpful, keeping the muscle mobile and stretched - AFTER initial healing.

    Sending healing thoughts and mojo.
