Thanks guys. I was looking at Outer Banks, but wasn't sure about dog friendly places. So for you who have gone with your dogs-please yes send info on places to stay with China. And-what is there to do other than beach-anything? I'm just trying to gauge how much time she will spend alone if we go some place without her....

I've been looking at the Bahamas and OMG I am dying to go but that I just cant do just yet because I really don't have anyone I trust enough to babysit her 24/7. And that is what I want-someone to stay with her in my home and really spend time with her. She tends to pace and whine until I get home and I cant have this while I'm away for 4 days in the Bahamas. So Outer Banks I think it will be...I've looked at Virginia Beach-Chincoteague Island but I don't know anyone whos taken a dog there and so I'm not sure what there is to do.

Oh no worries there-I'm taking her out of school for vacation if it falls during school. Simply because she never misses and we never go anywhere...

I haven't been to Chincoteague or Assateague with a dog, but I went several times growing up and I could see them having strict pet regulations due to the wild horses. Parts might wildlife refugees?

Virginia beach would probably be fine, but it is a busier area. I think that the Carolina beaches are great because there is so much beach front that you will be able to find a cheaper rental on a quieter part of a beach.

I feel like whatever you choose will probably end up great!

My most favorite thing to talk about are my fur kids, my 2nd? The Outer Banks!! This will be a long post! lol

We have never stayed North of the Bonner bridge (Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hill, etc). The beaches there have restrictions for dogs and the area is more populated and an urban feel. We stay South of the Bonner on Hatteras Island. There you have in order from crossing the bridge -- Rodanthe, Salvo, and Waves - three communities close together, then Avon, A little further down you have Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras. Across the sound - you can take a ferry from Hatteras to another dog friendly area (very dog friendly actually) - Ocracoke Island. A free 45-60 minute ferry ride (car on ferry).

We stay in Rodanthe and Frisco. The beaches there are NPS and require a 6ft leash at all times. Many of the restaurants allow leashed pets on the deck. Most places will keep a treat bin and water out for the pups. Late May - Late September are pretty much prime months and the costs of the homes are far more expensive than other months. Starting June - the beach sand gets pretty hot -- I assume it is like that at all beaches. We go Easter each year and then early to late October or November. Word of warning, purchase the trip insurance because OBX is prone to hurricanes, tropical storms......just recently the area got pummeled by the nor' easter.

If you go to any of these rental agencies, you'll be able to plug in dates and preferences. Select pet friendly of course.
Outer Banks Rentals And Real Estate in Hatteras, NC | Outer Beaches
301 Moved Permanently (not sure why the link says that - It's midgett realty)
Object moved (this one is surf or sound)
I can recommend the above -- I've rented from each several times.

      Things to do --

Visit areas along the sound. There a spot called Canadian hole just outside Avon and it's wonderful for the pups. Water is calm and not deep at all. Very pet friendly area. It's also fun to watch the wind surfers. They can get pretty wild out there.

Graveyard of the Atlantic museum. This would be without the pup. OBX has a lot of history and the museum contains a lot of it. It's right there in Hatteras.
Visit Oden's dock and try to catch the boats coming in with the catch of the day.
Head up to the Oregon Inlet and the same - try to catch the boats coming in. The beach around the inlet is beautiful.
Two light houses - Bodie and Cape Hatteras -- pet friendly but you can't climb them with the pups in tow. I wasn't interested that anyway! Tiring just looking up those steps.
Frisco put put golf and go carts. I don't think pups are allowed on the course but you may reach out to see.

North of the bonner - There an an aquarium on Roanoke Island. You can google to get the location. It's right there...maybe an hour drive but if you have kids, might be worth it. Pupless trip there.
North of the Bonner - Jockey's Ridge State park -- pretty awesome. Pet friendly. Google it for more information.

Ocracoke Island-- very pet friendly. Quaint little island and you can park and just walk around and enjoy. Visit the pony pens as well. The ferry ride over is free and well worth it just to ride that.

Hatteras Island has an island feel - very laid back. One main road. No hustle and bustle. The pups are allowed on all beaches with a leash. It's pretty awesome.

If you need more specific info, just let me know. Hatteras Island is my true happy place.

We go to Duck in the OBX, so north of Kitty Hawk. No leash restrictions on the beach in Duck except they're supposed to be under your control and of course, pick up after them. Nothing fries me more than watching people let their dog poop in the surf and just leaving it. Duck is a smallish town, lots of small neighborhoods with homes or condos for rent. In addition to the beach, that area of the OBX is pretty narrow so it's easy to get to either the ocean or the sound, where there are no waves to contend with. The Town of Duck has built a long boardwalk through town along the sound side that goes past most of the shops and you can walk your dogs on leash along there also. There's also a paved walkway that goes through town and to the north that people use for walking and riding bikes. To the north is Corolla with a lighthouse and "excursions" to see the wild horses, etc. Corolla is very popular but I don't know about the pet situation up there, you'd have to look for places to stay that allow pets. Here's a site that kind of describes all the towns along the OBX, click on the town you want to see and the FAQs will tell you about that area and what the pets on the beach rules are. I haven't been south to Hattteras, Avon, Buxton, etc, but I'm thinking those areas may be less crowded during the summer than the northern beaches are. There are also links to various realty companies who manage the rental properties, there may also be some VRBO places to check out.

Driving down from the north on 168, just before you come into Kitty Hawk, there is a new water park which we haven't tried but it looked like lots of people were using it last summer, which I think is the first summer it was in operation.

Smartrock posted it -- the water park.

Also, in Rodanthe, there is a pet hotel/day care. Not sure how you feel about leaving the pup but I know people have nothing but positive things to say.
      Home

Also, in Rodanthe, there a new amusement center for wall climbing, arcade games, laser tag --- Hwy 12 amusements.

Restaurants --- Way too many to list! But I can provide some of our favorites...

      Rodanthe -
      Lisa's Pizzeria
      Atlantic Coast Cafe
      Waves Deli
      Top Dog Cafe

      Avon
      Bros Sandwich Shack
      Oceana's Bistro
      The Froggy Dog

      Buxton/FriscoHatteras -
      Frisco Sandwich Shop
      Buxton Munch
Gingerbread House for pizza and wings
      The Hatterasman
      Sol Waterside Grill
      Pops
      Sony's for breakfast

As you can see, plenty....and there are plenty more I forgot.

Near the ferry docks in Hatteras, there are lots of shops too.

I've got a silly question...why are all the rentals like 5 6 bedrooms? When I settle on one I am getting the whole house right?

There are some 2 to 4 bedrooms but the majority are 5 and up. Especially ocean front. So funny.. I had the same question years ago and called the rental agency. You get the the entire house. Most have floor plans so you can check the layout.

We do a lot of vacations with our dog. We also have 2 kids so activities are must.

My fav spot for kids and dogs.
      1. Salisbury beach campground. Merrimac river and ocean on 2 sides. The river beach is dog friendly.
      2. White moutains. full.of lakes and tonnes ot activities for kids . Alot of doggy day care as last year went to a big fair and gigi played with dogs. Cabin and lake houses for rent.
      3. Poconos . Promised land state park. Especially pickerel point campground. Beach on 3 sides and it fits only 12 RVs. They do have cabins for rent.
      4. Hersey park campground. More for kids but rhe big river in rhe back for gigi.
      5. Outer banks. Especially Delaware seashore park . The side of the dog friendly beach has all the cabins and town houses for rent.
      6. Appalachian from front royal to smokies are all beautifully with alot campground and cabins.

All the campgrounds we stay have cabins and most will have atleast 1 dog friendly cabin. If not rhe camper we stay there for the campfire and kids activities.

I have a tonne of more spaces in vt , me , va etc.
      If u need more ideas.

One of the reason we have a camper is because of the dog.

We have kids and dog and love vacations . Camping has let down this path. Gigi has become a good camping dog. She hangs out in rhe camper for 7 to 8 hrs and chills now. Loves all the activities ....
