Yes, that is another thing I was thinking of, but afraid to bring it up, as I try not to pass judgment on the end, as it's such a personal thing. It did seem to me that he let Merle go too long, in order to die a "natural" death. Since I am dealing with some end of life issues with my German shepherd, I think about this a lot. I suppose since everything he and Merle did was natural, maybe it was right for them, I don't know. I wonder if he was just so afraid to let go of Merle? It is difficult, no doubt about it.

Regarding Pukka's Promise (and maybe I should start another thread), I can relate to the wanting our dogs to live longer, but honestly 40 years or more?? I can see so many problems with that. Such as, who would take shelter dogs? And if the dogs weren't neutered, they would have all that more time to reproduce! Also, I think there would be an epidemic of dogs outliving their owners. And maybe less interest in getting a dog for that long of a commitment?

I can totally relate to author about the crap in our environment and how bad it is; however, by the time he listed all the evils, I came away with the discouraging feeling that it doesn't really matter what we do, no hope, so might as well just forget about it.

We shall see; Merle lived to be 14, let's see how Pukka does.

Personally, I am doing my best to give my dog a happy and healthy life, which means natural food, lots of exercise and minimum chemicals.
