He doesn't even have a limp! Past few weeks in NE Ohio have been frigid and snow. Leads to sidewalks packed with ice. We haven't been able to walk so I make sure to do some exercising (romping around in the house) to keep him loose.

Best of luck and I hope you get straight answer from the ortho.
Thanks! Hoping for a straight answer too!!

Can I ask why you went with TTA instead of TPLO? TTA is one that I'm currently doing some research on, so just super curious as I continue doing some homework on it.

Personally, I think when dealing with torn cruciates in large dogs, anything other than TPLO is a waste. I've heard of the other methods failing and additional surgeries needed. Our big boy had both knees done back in 2004. He's been gone now several years, but the surgeries went fine and he recovered well and had no problems, no arthritis or anything. I also think CM in large active dogs is almost cruel. It's months on end of no activity. I'd rather deal with the surgery and have them up and about...

Thanks Jen. CM would definitely have been tougher on her if she was active/rambunctious by nature. She's a sweet girl, but a bit of a lazy lab CM has been quite easy on her given what she was like pre-injury!

We were referred here because we were told they were the best in our area for this type of injury

I see you're from Canada too!

I live in Toronto as well. My dog had TPLO surgery in April 2015 at Home - West Toronto Vet Surgery West Toronto Vet Surgery and we did the water therapy at Toronto Dog Rehab | Animal Rehabilitation Centre . We had the plate removed from his leg in August 2015 as it really seemed to bother him which stalled his full recovery.

We went to the TVEH for a surgery consult (bone fragments in the shoulder) with our younger dog a couple of years ago. We met with Dr. Gillick and he left a very good impression. He was very thorough and went in detail through the options (surgical and non-surgical). After that we came to the conclusion that we would give it a little more time (bone fragments will move around and can either move into or out of the joint) and were pleasantly surprised that the limping stopped and we no longer needed the surgery.
With our older dog we had TPLO surgery at the VEC (Veterinary Emergency Clinic - VEC SOUTH: 920 Yonge St. - (416) 920-2002 VEC NORTH: 280 Sheppard Ave. East - (416) 226-3663) in 2012. Our vet had initially recommended either the TVEH or the VEC for the surgery consult, but since this dog had a couple of other surgeries shortly before at the VEC and they were able to see us the next day for the consult and perform surgery the following day we went that route.

This is really great to hear that you had a good experience with TVEH. They were strongly recommended by our vet too.

TPLO and TTA are similar and from what I researched, recommended for larger dogs. Each procedure requires cutting of bone and inserting hardware. If I remember correctly, TTA is a newer procedure. I'm sure Tonya will be able to readily provide you the differences (she seems well versed in this). For me, I chose TTA because it was the preferred choice of my ortho and he had performed numerous with a great success rate.
