    Tight tendon?

Remy is almost 8 years old. We spent Thanksgiving in the woods and after lots of running like a pup, Remy was limping. His left rear leg was what we thought just tired or maybe irritated. So we took him in our cabin for the rest of the day and rested for the next few days. I started doing small but frequent walks with him. If I noticed limping I would back off the distance or the number of walks. So it varied.... I also had started him on vit C and glucosamine and chondroitin, thinking maybe the limp was arthritis related.

He varies one moment he can look completely normal other times limping. For sure, bouncing or running gets him limping.

We took him to the vet this week. He had xrays done and they tested his range of motion. The results of the xrays we negative to spurs, tears, breakage etc. Hips flex well but the left rear leg have a lack of mobility. The vet thinks that the tendon in that leg is tight, maybe injured the leg running some how. We have a referral to see an orthopedic vet but I feel loss. I don't understand what is going on.... Anyone have experience with a tight tendon and what are the remedies?

Tendon where in the leg? My Hershey was diagnosed with tight groin muscles when in fact he was deliberately tensing them so that he could continue to walk...his issue was actually spinal stenosis. When PT got his muscles relaxed, he had almost no control over his hind end. (It was a well respected orthopedic vet who made the misdiagnosis.)

I'm wondering if perhaps Remy is tensing to offset some other issue that was caused/aggravated by the extra running.

He was under full sedation when they tested his range of motion, so he was relaxed for sure..... he does get super tense at the vet's office. The vet doesn't know what tendon just in the rear leg...so he gave me the referral.

Sending good thoughts that the diagnosis will be an easy one for the ortho and you can get Remy back to normal quickly.

(Welcome to the board. Things are quiet here on weekends.)

Are there good physico/dog rehab specialists in your area? or general doggy rehab vet? if so, I'd ask the vet about going there. An ortho vet would be a good stop as well.

No rehabs specialist near by, the ortho vet we will be seeing in a few weeks is about 90 mins from us. Very interested to see how that appointment goes.

A quick update: We went to see the orthopedic vet this week. Hips look excellent but the knees don't. The head of the tibia is too steep. So the limping is caused from that finally becoming a problem. TPLO surgery is scheduled for Monday. I really didn't want to sit on this. The other leg isn't showing signs of being a problem but does have the same steepness to it, so we will see what happens there.

We ordered an orthopedic bed to replace the mat in his crate since he will be in the crate for 8 weeks recovering. I also have a sling and ramp on the way. This weekend I intend to practice with the new gear with him.

Best thoughts for successful surgery and uneventful healing headed your way. The advance practice is a great idea...springing something new on him after the surgery is something you want to avoid to the extent possible.

Sorry to hear it. I was a bit worried by your first post, having just gone through a tear / TPLO over here.

We are in our sixth week post op w/ Hoku. Lots of people here have had this experience, but I may be one of the more recent (I think we have one other), so if I can be any help, ask here or PM me. What I'll say is: it's really stressful early on, but gets better.

We also ordered an orthopedic bed. It was a great purchase, as that's what one of us lay upon in the first two weeks, as she preferred her old dog bed.

Good luck. It's a hassle, but will be Ok.

Thanks Abulafia! It's nice to have someone to ask questions to. I can believe it will be stressful for a while.... We also have two little ones and I am hoping to keep there play some what tame while in the house. Usually Remy will change rooms or retreat to our bed upstairs if the kids are being too loud.

Sort of off topic; I sent an email to my DS preschool just to give them a heads up there would be changes here in our routine (Sometimes changes at home can change a child's mood or have anxiety at a drop off) and things due to this surgery. Anyway, so his teacher asked me why do you think Remy's surgery would effect him? I was like well Remy is a family member. He goes where ever we go. He plays with the kids and the kids play with him. I felt myself get annoyed but then I thought about what would I have thought before having Remy. Probably the same because until you have a dog you just can't relate how they become your family.
