How long should he wear his cone?

We just had our 1 year old la neutered yesterday. How long should he wear his cone for? The vet said 10 days but that seems excessive to me and my poor puppy is so miserable with it on. He doesn't really want to eat yet unless I hand feed him. He barely drinks his water too. His incision looks normal.

You could take it off for him to eat, and then put it back on when he's done. Also, when you walk him, if he won't do his business with it on, take it off and put it on when he is back home, after he gets a drink. If you are 100% supervising him, like, he's sleeping next to you on the sofa, off is ok. Other than that, it's for the best if it's on. It's only 10 days in his whole life. Don't let the sad, pathetic face get to you LOL!

Just had a thought - to avoid reluctance on his part of getting the cone back on - start now with giving a treat immediately after putting it on. What Lab doesn't love treats? Don't let him think there's a choice, or back away from it, or run from you. Start with a treat from the very get go. Just a little tidbit and say good boy to him and love him up. I work at a veterinarian, frequently take off cones to walk the dogs, then put them back on, and never have an issue getting them back on with a little baby talk and loving on them as soon as it is on. It just becomes part of the routine to them.

Totally agree with LucyTudeon4Feet. Luckily my DH or I were home after Bandit and Archie were neutered but did use the cone when we could not keep a constant eye on him. The last thing you want is an infection.

    This ^

We always left the cone on for 14 days per our vet's instructions. Take off for eating, walking and that's it. And our dogs are afraid of the cones for the first few days...their own and each other's...so that's been no picnic.

It is a sad sight, our babies in their cones. If they lick the incision it can lead to problems including redness, swelling, irritation, infection, and sometimes even opening up of the incision, none of which you want. It takes about 10 days for the incision to heal fully, that's why that particular time frame is given. It can delay healing if they lick at it, so, be strong. It seems excessive now but soon it will be a fading memory for you both!

We have had them for 2 to 3 days and then only during unmonitored time for a 2 more days. Depends on if it healing and he trying to lick .
