Update on Molly's TPLO surgery - 6 weeks

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the great support when Molly was going into TPLO surgery. She is now 6.5 weeks post (!!!) surgery and in today for scans and physiotherapy. This'll be the first time we see what's going on on the inside so we're nervous and excited and hoping for the best! A few summary updates of healing to date:

    • She is slowly putting more weight on it (we even see her toes spread sometimes!)
    • She definitely hops a bit when she tries to move too quickly (i.e. trying to zoom to her food bowl, or when she's happy there's fresh snow on the ground)
    • She has had two UTIs since the surgery... sigh. Which we think originally started because she couldn't groom herself well because of the cone, but then reoccurred so we're hoping to get her bladder scanned today too to see if there's a stone or something (we also switched her food to a urinary/satiety blend to try and help because her original food we were told had too much ash in it which could cause crystals in urine)
    • Incision healed no problem, fur is growing back! Bruising after surgery was HORRIBLE. My god.
    • Because she was on antibiotics for the two UTIs, we don't know if the plate would have gotten infected in her leg, so we're hopeful the scans today show it's healing fine with no problems
    • She has developed this incredibly adorable pattern of almost a yoga stretch whenever she wakes up and she stretches out her TPLO leg
    • We start a more planful physio program next week (we were hoping to start this sooner but unfortunately got delayed because of health problems with her and other things) but ramping that up

Any tips post 6-week mark? Things we should look for? We can't wait to hear from the vet later today about the results of the scans!

    Michelle

Thanks everyone! Scans came back and show that the bones are fusing together nicely and she did great with physio. Not sure if it's common, but she was whining pretty consistently last night which they said could have been because of what they used to sedate for the scans. Very vocal labrador... for sure. lol

We start ramping up physio next week and home exercises! Fingers crossed!

    Oh! And no bladder stone.

Sounds good! The first weeks are pretty rough (we're in the 13th week P)). What PT plan have you been using?

I'd post a video of Hoku walking at about six or so weeks, but I don't do Youtube or any of that. As long as your pup is putting increasing weight on the leg, and you are making her move slowly ("SLOOOWWWWLY" is Hoku's new word, and she will switch to a snail's pace at it!), you're on the right road!

sounds like other than the UTI everything is going well!

the whining could be due to the anesthetic yeah, I had a few fosters who did that. or maybe due to it being paired with physio.

Hopefully things keep improving from here on out My experience was a bit different so not advise for 6+ weeks post op.
