    Update and Another Question

Oban had his first dose of Strongid last night. OMG, YUCK. I had to wade through deep snow to find the poop piles because he rarely poops on the trail. Full of the things, both poops. Gag. I am not really all that squeamish but to think he had that in him is awful. The coffee filter appeared before the wormer dose, with not too much effort on his part as it was all greased up with kefir.

Question if you have dogs and cats. Oban's Vet said twice I should worm the cats too. The cats have a different Vet and he says no, not necessary. He says if it was tapeworm, yes, worm the cats. But not if the dog had roundworm. Did you have roundworm in your dog and have to worm your cats too?

Considering that your guys mingle, I'd be worming the kitties, too.

My one experience with roundworms was with Sunnie's puppies (since advice I got from both my vet and the rescue's vet was to not deworm preemptively and so I waited till I realized that hadn't been good advice). That was disgusting. But my cats weren't allowed in the area where the x-pen was...didn't think Sunnie would take kindly to the cats in close proximity without us around...and so I was confident that things were contained. The puppers were not allowed outside of the x-pen at that time. (And when I took them outside, they stayed in one area...in a fenced-in spot....that I cleaned up totally. Kitties didn't go outside anyhow.)

The cat Vet called back and while he is surprised at the number and size of the roundworms coming out of Oban he still think the cats are not in danger and do not need to be wormed. Isn't this great? When medical people disagree?

I should have taken a picture today. Wouldn't the first time I've taken a picture of poop. Apparently for the number and size worms it's surprising Oban had no other symptoms. And apparently an adult dog is not usually so affected.

I would say yes to the pictures-for the uninitiated with worms. I know you can find pics on the net, but real life pics from our own dogs is 'more effective'.

Don't look if you are squeamish. Roundworm photos. This is not nearly as many as were in the two poops yesterday. They were looser poops yesterday too. For Oban this is a pretty large poop. A second one was much smaller than usual and no worms in it.

That sounds like it would have been tapeworm with the segments not broken off. When the segments break off they look a lot, a LOT, like rice. Guess how my cat Vet described the tapeworm that is not broken up? Fettuccine. Why, why must they use food to describe these things?
