    Splenectomy Update

It's been a long journey with lots of ups and downs, nights of crying, and trips to many vets and I feel I haven't updated or posted in a while but Zach is scheduled for a splenectomy and possible partial liver lobe resection Tuesday 2/7. Zach is anemic (25% RBC at his blood test from Thursday) but that is generally stable for him (we've only been at the highest 28% in the past few weeks). He may need a transfusion if he drops lower but the surgeon is prepared. The radiologist felt the mass on his spleen and liver were not masses that would rupture- as they didn't appear bloody or fluid filled- but there will be no way to tell for sure until they are removed and biopsied. We will be going to a branch of VCA.

I am a nervous/emotional wreck. Surgery makes me so scared although I know we need it. He isn't eating much and he's become very slow the past week or so and if we don't do it now we do risk possible rupture (while they don't appear bloody doesn't mean they won't rupture) or just continuous decline. I know some of you have shared splenectomy stories in the previous thread but any stories or advice would be appreciated. I cannot focus on anything, I feel very jumpy and anxious. I just hope for the best.

I'm so sorry that you're stressed. It's never easy.

Our surgeon did say that it is a very straightforward procedure. To quote, "It's not like I have to make any decisions once I get in there. I just take it out." Our 14 year old Fran did great and actually seemed to feel better afterward. She healed beautifully and we're taking her staples out tomorrow.

Just make sure to get the good drugs.

    Take care. All good thoughts.

Thank you all so much. It seemed like such an easy thing to consider when it was far off in the future. But now that the day has approached it is frightening
