    Neuter recovery and sedatives

I just dropped off Thor for his snip. He loves the vet so much, so many people to love on him. I wonder if he'll still feel that way after today's visit!

Anyways, since thor is so, ahem, 'exuberant', the technician offered to provide a sedative to help him stay calm for the first few days of healing. Have any of you used a sedative for this? I'm not sure which would be worse for him - being sedated, or not being sedated and risk recovery complications.

I didn't use any sort of sedative for Chase, who was about Thor's age at the time the deed was done. Our vet tends not to give anything like that, I suppose because he thinks maybe they'll limit their own behavior if it hurts. I'm not sure that's necessarily the case for dogs who are pretty stoic to begin with though. You could take some to have on hand if you find him too wound up, it would be easier to have it and not give it than find you need it at an inconvenient time and not have it available. I'd probably take some and then see how he actually does in the next few days.

Thor is very stoic and never shows pain, so I'm worried he'll just think it's business as usual. Keeping some on hand is a good suggestion. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

    That is a good idea.

Can't remember if Archie or Bandit came home with a pain med. The girls did. Pain med is a two edged sword - they don't hurt but because they don't hurt they don't restrict themselves.

    Sending mojo for Thor.

Agree that it's helpful to have just in case. We didn't use the sedative for Jackson's neuter, but I was given some when he had elbow surgery. I wasn't going to give it to him (Jackson's pretty mellow anyway), but he was in so much pain and so anxious after the elbow surgery that the sedative helped him relax and let the pain meds kick in and do their job.

We also used the sedative after we got our girl spayed - she's much more energetic and also a jumper, so the sedative was helpful in keeping her calm.

    Good luck!

Because Thor is "So Much Dog" (LOL), I would definitely consider some Ace (Acepromazine) and crate or ex pen time for the first 24/48 hours just to keep him from his normal activity level and routine. He shouldn't be in much pain, but too much activity right away might promote a hematoma in the scrotum, and other complications.

    Good luck Thor!!

He's home. Still a bit dopey and whiney, but yes I do have Acepromazine for sedation if necessary. He's not interested in moving much right now but we'll see how things go once the drugs start to wear off.
