The Itchy Dog Project - University of Nottingham, UK

The Itchy Dog Project | Own a retriever? Get involved!

Do you own a Golden or Labrador retriever and want to be involved in some citizen science?

If you own a Labrador or Golden Retriever (itchy or not!) then this is your chance to get involved in science and help us to understand what contributes to itchy skin conditions in dogs.

At least 10% of dogs suffer from skin problems and it can have a big impact on their lives, and the causes are thought to be complex. Other than being itchy, what differences are there between dogs with itchy skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, and those without such conditions? Register your Labrador or Golden retriever with us to help answer these questions today.
The aim of this study is to investigate the potential genetic and environmental causes of canine atopic dermatitis. It is hoped that a better understanding of what leads some dogs to develop cAD, whilst others do not, will help us to develop a strategy for reducing the number of dogs affected by this disease.

In order to do this, we have decided to focus on just two similar breeds; the labrador and golden retriever. We need your help to collect data on both atopic and non-atopic dogs' of these breeds to allow us to look for differences (genetic, environmental and behavioural) between atopic and non-atopic dogs. So if you own a labrador or golden retriever (itchy or not!) please get involved!

    Research team members include:

Dr Naomi Harvey: Research Fellow at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science at the University of Nottingham

Dr Sarah Blott: Associate Professor in Animal Breeding and Genetics

Dr Stephen Shaw: Clinical dermatologist and National Dermatology Advisor for Guide Dogs

Professor Gary England: Foundation Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science at the University of Nottingham, and Professor of Comparative Veterinary Reproduction
A Citizen Science project you can contribute to whether your dog is itchy or not. Many countries are accepted and I did the survey on Oban. Just click on the link at the beginning. After you complete the survey they will send you a link to register at CBARQ to see if itchy dogs have different behaviour patterns than non itchy dogs. You will get a passcode to identify you as being an Itchy Dog Project contributor. If you ever did CBARQ before (as I have) you will need a new email address, it won't take the one you originally signed up with, at least it wouldn't take mine.

They have a FaceBook page too: https://www.facebook.com/ItchyDogProjectUK/

LOL ... I filled it out for Chloe, who is not an itchy dog - figured they needed some control subjects.

Fitzi is a Lab/GSP cross so unfortunately we can't participate.

WE have the links for CBARQ and the Behavioural Study using it's data in the neuter links thread.

Neuter/Spay - Pros, Cons, Risks, Benefits - Research Article Links

The fourth link down and the third link down respectively. Oh heck, it looks like the CBARQ link is changed to C-BARQ: Canine Behavioral Assessment Research Questionnaire

    About the C-BARQ

The C-BARQ (or Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire) is designed to provide dog owners and professionals with standardized evaluations of canine temperament and behavior. The C-BARQ was developed by researchers at the Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society of the University of Pennsylvania, and is currently the only behavioral assessment instrument of its kind to be extensively tested for reliability and validity on large samples of dogs of many breeds. The current version consists of 100 questions describing the different ways in which dogs typically respond to common events, situations, and stimuli in their environment. The C-BARQ is simple to use, and can be completed by anyone who is reasonably familiar with a dog's typical, day-to-day behavior. On average, it takes from 10-15 minutes to complete.
The C-BARQ is available to veterinarians, behavioral consultants, researchers, shelters, breeders, and working dog organizations with an interest in screening dogs for the presence and severity of behavioral problems. For a limited period, it is also open to pet-owners interested in comparing their dogs to others in the C-BARQ database.
I was thinking of Fitzi but thought he was mostly Lab. They do ask for the registered name of your dog and the kennel club he/she is registered with. I believe investigating a genetic link to itchiness is one of the things The Itchy Dog Project wants to pursue and they do ask if you are willing to provide a cheek swab for a DNA sample if they pay the postage. But I didn't know the dogs had to be ALL Labs or ALL GR. I thought they just wouldn't swab ones they couldn't trace pedigree on.
