i have a guiding eyes released dog who has a "soft" trachea. they released him because he couldn't pull on a harness. only in the last 6 months due i notice him hacking a bit (he will be 12 in oct) . i am a believer in chinese herbs, and contacted pawhealer.com and they made him a special concoction which i would say has stopped the hacking more than 90% of the time.

Chili had this problem but it wasnt due to trachea...it was due to his elbow being screwed up and needing surgery. not second guessing you, but could it be something else like a leg injury? my vet couldnt id the injury even with xrays, I had to go to ortho specialist. if I listened to my vet, chili would of never received surgey. I had to demand a specialist pretty much.

My Thunder cannot run around a lot either. He gets really bad stomach pains and dry heaves after hard exercise. He can chase a ball for a bit and walk on the leash, but if he plays hard and runs around a lot with Skye, he pays for it. Nobody ahs been able to determine the cause. This started after his 2 obstruction surgeries so the vet questions maybe scar tissue/lesions that cause pain from hard exercise.

Anyways I did nose training with him. A dog training center in the area offered it. Thunder LOVED it! We did several levels of classes and he was really good at it. His trainer was impressed. However the classes were pricey so I didn't continue. I was able to have him go through 3 classes and then I recreated the setting at home inside the house on rainy days/outside in my fenced in yard.

I used to set up boxes, chairs and all kinds of obstacles in the back yard and hid treats, hot dogs, chicken, carrots etc. and he had to find them. It really made a huge difference in his behavior inside the house. If you have a bored dog I HIGHLY recommend it. It is a cool way to train a dog.

We walked a lot too and visited neighbors who have older, quieter dogs and that is how he was socialized.

I am sorry to hear about your pup. Hope you can find a way to help him.

Hey Kellsie's Mom, sorry to hear about your dog. Today was pretty depressing. I took my dog to the dog park and he was really struggling. The hot weather probably makes it worse for him, but he was mostly laying down when all the others dogs were running around. Plus, ever since the the hot weather arrived he's been sleeping a ton. Nose training might be the way to go. I need to look into it.

Nosework is fabulous! Maxx and I are now working on our 2nd scent. The only time you would need to worry about working fairly quickly would be during the timed tests for titles, if you choose to go for titles. (Many do not.) It is great fun for the dog and owner alike and I highly recommend it!
