    Geeking out on ACL Ruptures

    Saw this article, much information about the Labrador. Thought you all might be interested.

    Heck, Labradorks... I retired from bench research because I got tired of reading this sort of stuff. You definitely gotta get out more!

    Kidding aside, though. What this says to me is that we cannot know based upon gross phenotype (i.e., the Breed Standard) which type of Lab is going to have more ACL ruptures. Too polymorphic. It's going to be many lifetimes before science can sort it out.

    And... even if we DID know the exact gene set that predisposes dogs to ACL rupture, would we want to strictly avoid breeding these dogs?

    I would say the answer is NO. But it would help us to breed more responsibly if we knew more about the genetic predisposition.

    LOL, I used to read this stuff too but not as a 'professional' scientist. From what I gather, agree with TuMicks, polygenic and even if we could isolate it, then what. Says the lady living through bilateral ruptures and TTA surgery as we speak.
