Chloe’s being treated for Lyme but

we’re not sure she has it.

Dogs supposedly don’t get the bulls-eye rash from Lyme, but yesterday morning she woke up with what appears to be exactly like a Lyme bulls-eye rash surrounding a bite of some sort on her belly. We never saw a tick there, but that doesn’t mean she never had one. It’s very red and inflamed, but dry and not itchy at all.

Took her to the vets and they were mystified as they all agreed that it looks like a Lyme rash but as I said supposedly dogs don’t get them. If she was recently infected a blood test wouldn't show anything for a few weeks, by which point damage could be setting in, so they decided to treat her just in case. She’s on doxycycline for the next month.

The other possibility is a weird reaction to some sort of sting, but they didn’t want to take a chance on not treating for Lyme because if she were human they would be pretty sure that’s what it was ...

    Weird.

That is weird. I had no idea they DIDN'T get the bullseye. Good to know! Hope she doesn't have it and gets through the meds without much issue; I know they can be hard on some dogs.

hopefully it's not that! (or if it is, the treatment gets it before it sets in).

    Yes, for a month

Still better than Lyme ... I have friends (both human and their dogs) who are battling complications from Lyme and are having a rough time. Plus people who have lost dogs to Lyme nephritis ....

I figured we didn't usually see a rash because of all their fur. Unless Chase was bitten inside his ear or near his privates, I'd never see a rash. He has been treated with doxy before and had no issues. Hopefully Chloe will breeze through without problems.

I've had two dogs with Lyme, Noah lived a good long life with no complications. Elvis passed at the age of 10 due to kidney failure. I'm praying it's just some weird rash on Chloe and no further complications.

That’s what I was thinking - if this hadn’t been on her lower abdomen (near her groin) where she doesn’t have as much fur, I would never have known about it. And most of the time that we find ticks, it’s on the head or neck where the fur is thick. All the vets I’ve spoken to say dogs don’t get the rash, but a friend from dog training swears she’s seen a dog with it before, so maybe it happens, but not frequently enough to make the veterinary literature.

Good to know Chase has been okay with doxy ... I know she was treated for asymptomatic anaplasmosis years ago and did fine, but I can’t remember if they gave her doxy or something else.
