Hi. I have seen many insect bites cause the type of lesion you are describing. Also, I practiced in Texas for over 20 years and we saw Lyme disease in dogs almost every week. I never saw a lesion as you describe on any of those dogs. Question: If your vet thought that it was Lyme disease, why was it not confirmed by doing a Lyme titer test? Personally, I have a problem putting any dog on an antibiotic for 30 days unless I absolutely know that it is necessary. If you do go that route, be sure to put your dog on a good probiotic and keep your dog on it for at least a month after you finish the treatment. Otherwise, you will have some serious disruption of the normal microflora that live in the bowel. Good luck.

They felt that if it is Lyme, then the exposure is very recent and the Lyme test would take several weeks to show results. Rather than risk her getting sick during that time, they both felt it was better to treat her now. She will be on probiotics, thanks. For what it’s worth, a friend who works at a vet hospital in DE tells me they have twice seen a bulls-eye rash on dogs and in both cases the dogs were subsequently treated for Lyme, although I don’t know if the diagnosis was confirmed, or if, like Chloe they were treating based a suspicion. The rash is about 6-8 inches in diameter - much bigger than anything I’ve ever seen for an insect bite around here, although anything is possible.

I was going to ask if the ruled out ring worm, but a 6-8 inch diameter rash is bigger than ringworm.

I hope you all get to the bottom of it, good thoughts for Chloe.

Still better than Lyme ... I have friends (both human and their dogs) who are battling complications from Lyme and are having a rough time. Plus people who have lost dogs to Lyme nephritis ....
I know a lady through FB who had Lyme years ago and was never treated. She ended up having 3 children on the Autism Spectrum from her untreated Lyme. Not something to mess around with.

Well, we still don’t know if she actually has Lyme, but after two doses of doxy the rash is much improved and she is more energetic and less mopey than she has been the past two days. Could be a coincidence, but either way I’m glad she’s feeling better.

Was talking to folks at our training class today and at least two other dogs are currently on Doxy for Lyme ... welcome to NJ!

Oh, wow. I complain a lot about the Sierra of northern NV (if you haven't noticed) especially this winter. But... we do not have fleas or ticks. Or blow flies or black flies. We don't have skeeters where I live (5500 feet) though we do just about any place we train so we do put them on Heart Guard.

Just had a dog on Doxy for 10 days for an abscess. But wow, a month. Hope she does well.
