There's only one vet I know of who sometimes comes on here, so most of us are dog owners like yourself. I'm afraid it's nothing I've ever dealt with and all I could do is look it up online, like you probably already have. Treating Hematuria in Dogs | Blood in the Urine in Dogs | petMD

I'm sure if you were at the vet's office and poor Gus pee'd a big puddle of blood in the waiting area they'd sit up and take some action. I hope it's easily treatable. Good luck to you and Gus.

Way too many reasons that this could be happening.

Sending good thoughts. Please update when you can.

Too many possibilities. From what you are saying (peeing lots of urine with frank blood), male dog (you didn't say if he was neutered or not), my first guess would be a bladder stone. Sounds like he may have had a partial urethral obstruction and then enough pressure built up behind it from the large volume of urine, it manually pushed it through. Then the frank blood showed itself at the end as it usually does when there is bleeding in the bladder. Unfortunately, there are many other possibilities and I am sure you vet will likely check him out and find out exactly. In the meantime, watch him closely to make sure that he passes urine during any attempt to urinate. Let us know how it turns out.

Hey everyone, we have been back from the vet for a little bit and I am cuddling with Gus on the couch. Thank you all for your thoughtful comments and opinions. For those who asked, Gus is neutered.
    Here is how it went:

I brought in the urine/blood sample I took from him. The doctor said that they had to separate the blood from the urine twice to even get a reading on the urine, and even then there was a huge concentration of blood in the urine.
They tested it for crystals, protein, bacteria, etc. He had a rectal exam and that whole area is very sensitive from all the strain.
There were no crystals so not much of a chance of there being stones. Protein was a little high but he said that is because of all of the blood. Bacteria, normal/nothing of concern.

Gus has tick fever, I know this because he was treated for it and "cured" a little over a year ago. However it's never really cured and the symptoms can always come back, so the doctor sent in a special test to see if that is flaring up and possibly causing all this bleeding.

He is also checked the prostate, which is not an abnormal size. So not a huge chance of there being a prostate infection, but he wants to rule it out so is testing for it.

If the tick fever results turns up "negative" he said we might go on to abdominal x-rays and/or testing further for stones.

In the meantime we were prescribed an antibiotic for him to take morning and night for a week, and he received an anti inflammatory injection.

My homework is basically just to keep him calm, encourage him to keep eating and drinking, and take him out to pee often. The clinic is closed over the weekend but he gave me his personal email so to alert him if Gus starts feeling worse. I'll get a call Monday morning on the tick fever test results and we will go from there.

I just want to get those x-rays so that we can rule out tumors. I don't want my boy to have cancer. :'(

    ALSO -

They weighed him. He was 82 lbs on Tuesday, and he is 77 pounds today. No meals were skipped and he has only been at that weight when he was on a strict diet. I'm so worried..

Thank you all of you. <3 I'm trying to handle it well but I'm just so scared and am just bursting randomly into tears.
He is now heaving on and off. Acting normally but took him out and he is still peeing in red.

Gave him a bath and feeding him now... keep sending the positive thoughts pls. <3

Thanks for keeping us updated. Sending all good thoughts that this is something easy to fix, that Gus will be OK.

I'm thinking the heaving is most likely from the meds...hope so, anyway.

    Stay strong.
