If he saw you packing, that could be it for sure. You can get a cheap electronic thermometer at the drug store and just mark it as the dog's rectal one so you don't ever ever mix that up! LOL

Do you travel enough that he knows what the packing means? I'm always amazed - if Thor sees us packing certain bags (like our camp gear duffels) he goes bonkers crazy because he knows it's vacation for him too. But every time I pull out my work-travel rolly bag he gets mopey since it means I'm leaving.

This always seems to happen before a trip to us as well, and nothing trip related. A limp, some vomiting, diarrhea, it seems like always right before a trip, whether they're going or not. I hope Chili is back in good form quickly.

You know also, Chili is the age where you start to see some slowing down. No longer the wild pup you know. When this first started with Hemi I was like whats wrong with him. The answer nothing, just finally learning to chill. Its funny as I was thinking about this kind of thing this morning. I am up and out of the bed and dressed and walking out of the bedroom, I turn and he is still curled up on the floor. I have to say come on Hemi time to go outside and potty and time for breakfast when then he gets moving.

When he was 2 and under, the second the alarm went off, COME ON DAD LETS GET UP LETS GET GOING!!!!!!
From 2 to about 3, up but looks at me, hmm dad hit the snooze, ok we can wait until he gets moving. Once he starts moving through we are up and running through the house.
From 3-5, he waits until I start moving before he actually gets up. He may peek at me with one eye when alarm goes off but waits at least and can sleep in on weekends.
After 5 till now, Alarm goes off, snuggle up to dad and get all comfy, maybe he will hit snooze lets enjoy the snuggle and sleep a few more. Oh dads up, watch with one eye open until he actually leaves the bedroom.

    They do sadly get older.

well I dropped him off at pet sitter this morning. they have a younger yellow lab(and 2 old weimar's) that should keep him busy. Im amazed that he knew something was up. hope he has a better time at sitter than when I boarded him.

Dogs have a unique ability to 'READ ' our feelings and actions. I bet he picked up your packing equated to you leaving.

Hoping he is distracted at the sitters and can be joyously happy and full of energy when you return.
