Ask them who the manufacturer is of the shot you already, I mean Loki got, and the manufacturer of the one they want to give him now. It is possible they are switching brands but that should not mean Loki needs a new shot. Doesn't your vaccination certificate from last time say when he is due again? Mine does.

Heck, at his age I just wouldn't do it. Distemper and Parvo are most serious in puppies and young dogs. And there hasn't been a case of canine hepatitis in N. America for years, according to information I got, which I may have got slightly incorrect as I'm going from memory. But it's a pretty remote chance of a 10 year old dog getting any of them so seriously to badly affect him, unless he has other health issues going on.

I'm sure his information says he is "due" in a year, because in their opinion, he is. I know rabies is law, so I am not arguing about that. Can I "just say no" to the vet about the others? It feels weird.

LOL, of course you can. Just say NO to drugs. I did.

We are all awfully curious about the answers your Vet will give you though. You wouldn't like to pursue it just for our entertainment? KIdding, just say no.

Mine is 8 and we stopped all the vaccines at the age of 5, except from rabies (law).

There is the Continuum vaccine, which was tested for 3 years some years ago. I asked Dr. Dodds about it, and she said that I really didn't need to change to that brand, even for pups and yearlings. I can't even think of any distemper/parvo vaccines out there now that are not high titer/low passage, getting past maternal antibodies in a puppy to make them take effect. She said that the current vaccines have been tested, if not by the companies then by the vet researchers, and they all last a long time.

I would NOT vaccinate a dog who has gotten yearly vaccines with a distemper/parvo combo again, unless I absolutely had to board him. And even then I would titer him if I had to.

For me, this scenario the receptionist is giving you would be a deal breaker and I'd be looking for another vet, IF this is what the vet actually insists upon. The receptionist may be simply marketing, in the "would you like fries with that?" way of thinking. I agree that you need to talk to the vet. This start going to the three year protocol NEXT year makes no sense. Vet school Penn went to it in the Bellwether issue for January 2000. By then, I'd been doing this for years, and I do rescue. It worked for me and my dogs, as I titered.

I would not stop heartworm testing and preventative at this age. I don't vaccinate dogs not going into the field with lepto. However,if you do vaccinate for lepto, it is an annual vaccine, as it is not a viral vaccine.

Stick to your guns. He is YOUR dog, and it is your money, your decision. You are his protector. Junk science from a marketing standpoint is not going to increase his protection against distemper and parvo, but might harm him. Vaccinating seniors can be like throwing gasoline on a fire if there are any health issues to bring out.

Ask this: Can your vet guarantee, IN WRITING and on the hospital LETTERHEAD, that the vaccine he wants to give will not harm the dog and may you show it to a professor at a veterinary school for that vet's opinion? I'd run it by Dr. Schultz! Or Dr. Jean Dodds. I might even make noises about how you heard that it is malpractice to over vaccinate, blah blah blah, if I had to. Or just vote with your feet. I have done it.

I personally wouldnt do any additional shots other than rabies. I havent vaccinated my 16 year old pom since she was 8. My other 3 dogs are all 5 and all due for shots right now, im going to go ahead and do them for my own peace of mind but it will be the last time for them other than rabies
