    Dog ate tampons🤢

I really need to start coming to this forum more often. Seems every time I post its cause my Tonka has been up to no good.
Were usually good at passing things we shouldn't have eaten. Tonight he snuck up to my bathroom garbage and ate a few used tampons. I'm quite disgusted with him at the moment.
I'll call my vet in the morning as I don't see this urgent. But has anyone ran into problems from a dog eating these??

Not specifically tampons but there's the risk of obstruction. Is there an emergency vet you can call?

Yeah, my daughter's dog did the same thing. She called the vet and they told her to bring the dog in. They gave her something to make her throw up because they said it could cause an obstruction. Depending upon how long ago it happened, it may no longer be in his stomach and making him throw up wouldn't solve the problem but if there's someone answering your vet's phone, I'd probably call tonight.

I specifically remember because they gave her some medication/tablet that was put under her eyelid to make her vomit and I'd never heard of that before.

This can indeed be urgent. Have participated in at least a half dozen gastric obstructions caused from tampon ingestion. I would take my dog to the ER now and hope they can make him vomit them up.

If it were one I'd say keep a close eye on the dog. Three or a "few", I say call the vet. I'd be worried about obstruction.

I called the emergency vet last night and before I could even say how many he had eaten he said bring him in right away. Which I was kinda like okay bud. Money hungry much? My dogs eaten far worse than this and has passed it no problem.
I THOUGHT he had eaten 3-4. Turns out it was SEVEN. He just threw them up now.
*** my own vet emailed me back and said to bring him in this morning if he doesn't throw them
    up tonight.

Lesson learned on my end. Tonka is almost 18 months and has never went on a garbage ransack like this. From now on I will be using a different garbage he cannot access.

This could have been so much worse!!

They are MEANT to expand and obstruct so I'm not surprised your VEt said bring him in right away. I bet Vets are used to finding more than the owner thought went down too.

Jet grabbed one, used, on a hiking trail once. I managed to fish it out before she gulped. I didn't even know what she grabbed till I got it out. Yuck. Not to mention, who would leave it there? On the side of a well used hiking trail?

I wouldn't fault the emergency vet for recommending he be brought in right away. I'm sure they've seen dogs with obstructions from tampons before. If you've ever had a dog with an obstruction, you really, really do not want to go through that experience again.

One of my dogs got an obstruction from eating a pair of ankle height socks, not balled together. My other dog nearly obstructed from eating mulch/chewing sticks. Both got surgery but the stick/mulch one the vet was able to push the mass of crud past the junction between the small and large intestine without cutting open the intestines themselves and with a tube of cat laxative on board, she was able to pass offending matter. The sock fiend did not barf up one of the socks and got his intestines cut open to retrieve it. Worst part is, it's not like they learn not to eat the same thing just because they've had surgery, they'll go right back for another before they've even healed up, given the chance. There have been a few others on here over the years whose dogs have obstructed, one I recall was particularly ill for quite a while. The surgery can be a very expensive procedure as well. So, the emergency vet, knowing the possibilities, was more likely trying to spare you that whole ordeal than line his own pockets.

I agree not to fault the emergency vet for wanting the dog seen right away. That said, the one time Cookie ate part of a towel (that had had whipped cream on it - it was used to clean up my daughter after a pie fight - long story), our vet told us how to induce vomiting over the phone rather than having us bring her in immediately. Of course, we’ve been going there for 20 years now so they know us well and know what we are capable of and that we can follow directions - a vet who didn’t know us might not have wanted to take a chance on our screwing it up and then suing them for malpractice.

Mine have (thankfully) never eaten tampons, but pads are another story - I can’t remember who it was (I think probably Mulder?) who used to get into those, but they always managed to pass through - usually unchanged. He seemed to have swallowed them whole and that’s how they came out! YUCK!!! Sass would get into the trash and just carry them around - leaving used pads in the middle of the family room or kitchen for you to find later, hopefully not with an unsuspecting guest in tow. To stop that we got better trash cans for the bathrooms that have lids she can’t get into.
