My little buddy had his little buddies snipped

Milo went in last Friday for the snip. They said he did great and was pretty loopy when I picked him up later that day. They sent me home with some sedatives and said to keep him sedated for 2 weeks until the stitches are removed. That seems like an awful long time to keep him sedated. So far, he hasn't needed the cone of shame but am ready to put it on him if I need to.

Poor little guy, I feel bad for doing that to him but it was necessary.

I'll post a pic of the sutures if anyone wants to see them.

Sedated? I didn't even have to keep my boy sedated after TPLO surgery. How old was your pup anyways? Seems sort of soon to have snipped.

I didn't use any pain meds or sedation at all after Bubba's neuter aside from what they gave him at the office to keep him calm and comfortable after waking up. They didn't send me home with anything (though they said to call if he seemed in pain, but didn't expect him to be). Others on here have said their vets sent them meds which they used for a few days. I think it depends on the vet, but 2 weeks of sedation seems super out of the norm.

He was only 8 weeks old in my avatar pic....Pretty adorable huh?

Yeah, he's 19 months old now, done growing, and even though his little buddies were not really a problem, it was time.

He plays kinda rough with the other dog in my house so I think I'll keep him sleeping for a few more days and then assess the situation.

Did the Vet actually give you enough meds to last two weeks? I wonder if the Vet meant to keep him sedate, as in quiet and calm and no wild running around, but not doped up as in sedated? Could you separate him from your other dog to that end?

Yeah, I got a bottle with 30 little white pills. I can't remember the name of them at the moment but they seem to knock him out pretty well. 2 weeks seems like a long time to keep him drugged up so I'll probably stop in a day or 2 and see what happens.

Separating the dogs won't be that easy without locking one of them in the garage or outside and with the temps well over 100 this week, that's not really an option. I'll just have to be extra vigilant and not allow them to play. After all, I'm in charge right?

Over the phone, our vet mentioned we'd get a couple of days of pain killers and that she could give us an optional sedative if we felt like he needed it. Well, Thor gets SO EXCITED AND HAPPY when he's at the vet that when we dropped him off she said the 'optional' sedative might be a really good idea. We did take home a few and only gave it to him once, about 2 days after the surgery. He had emerged enough from the haze and pain that he was ready to GO GO GO again and we wanted him calm for another day or two. But there is no way I'd want to give it to him for 2 weeks! 2 weeks after surgery he was cleared to hike and play again, but we had been ramping back up to that with leashed walks and supervised controlled play time.

So it's been almost a week and Milo is doing great. He has not had to wear the cone of shame as he's not been chewing at his staples. The would has healed nicely and he is due to have the staples removed this coming Monday. We resumed our daily walks and dog park visits a few days ago and he's been wonderful. Yay Milo! He's such a good boy.....

Nice to hear....good thoughts that the rest of his recovery period will go well. You don't want to overdo things and have him regress. Our recovery period for each and every neutering, male and female, was 14 days. Cone. No exerting. No long walks. No doggy playing hard. We never had any issues.
