    quick question Rimadyl

Cilek is 12.5 years old and has osteoarthritis. I wanted to write a long post about her condition but couldn't find the time yet. I need to learn something about this drug.

My aim is to figure it out if she is in pain or not. She can't stand on her own. She doesn't want to walk. I feel like she has pain but vet insists on she doesn't. So I asked another vet and he gave me Rimadyl which I also wanted to try.
Because of the famous side effects I was afraid of using it regularly so I used it this way:
First 2 days 50 mgs daily (she is 65 lbs).
    3 days break
    2 days 50 mg
    1 day break
    1 day 50 mg + 25 mg

As a result I couldn't figure it out.
I read somewhere one's dog did very well on this drug especially after 3 weeks of regular use.
Do NSAIDs have a cumulative effect? I mean will it make a difference to give her Rimadyl 5 consecutive days instead of 2?

I'm really not sure how long it takes for Rimadyl to accumulate in the system. I know some dogs react very quickly to it. OTOH, Kimber's been taking 50 mg daily for 5 years and, knock on wood, her liver is fine. The vet said this dosage is actually very low for her size, FYI.

    How much does she weight?
For 5 years everyday? Such a relief to hear this.

Mulder was on it for almost 2 years with no problems before he died (which wasn’t related to the Rimadyl). I have others use it for short term issues (2 weeks or so at a time). Scully was on a different NSAID (Deramaxx) for about 7 years prior to her death.

From what my vet told me, most dogs are fine with it, but that for those who will have a liver reaction, it will happen quickly. For dogs who are going to be on it longer term, they do a blood test before starting, and then again about a month or so in. If all is well, then they don’t really worry about it unless the dogs show symptoms. They don’t do blood tests for dogs who are using it short term - just tell the owners what to watch out for as the initial treatment is simply to stop the drug, which for short term use would be happening anyway.

I don’t think I would bother with what you are doing - I would give it to her regularly for a week or two and then have her liver values checked. I’m not sure that on and off like that prevents liver problems and it probably lessens the effectiveness of the pain relief.

As for dosage, the short term users were between 50-60 lbs and were on 50 mg. Mulder was on 100 msg, and he was 85lbs.

We had a collie on it everyday of her life from the age of 9 until she died at the age of 14. We had liver levels done at initiation and then every 3-6 months (can't remember exactly). She did well on it but it is a drug that has to be monitored. The off and on dosage schedule would interfere with it being able to reach the appropriate level to have the desired affect. I haven't looked at it's half life which is "the period of time required for the concentration or amount of drug in the body to be reduced by one-half. We usually consider the half life of a drug in relation to the amount of the drug in plasma. A drug's plasma half-life depends on how quickly the drug is eliminated from the plasma."

Kimber's 68 lbs. full dosage would be about 100 mg for her. She gets the liver tests about every 6 months and is fine.

One day she missed a dose and she was in pain- wouldn't settle down, panting, keep coming up to me without purpose. It was awful. Rimadyl has been a life changer for her.

Cookie had a bad reaction to Rimadyl pills (gastric ulcer), when he vomited a brown-ish liquid I stopped it immediately.
A couple of days ago he started limping badly on his left front leg (took x-rays, it's degenerative joint disease in his elbow). I told my vet that he had a bad reaction to Rimadyl, so he is now on Rimadyl injections instead and is doing fine. Tomorrow we go for the last dose.
An option to consider if she doesn't do well with the pills. Most dogs do.

I read a similar thing that dogs usually give that bad liver reaction quickly.
Cilek's blood tests came back perfect. She had a full check-up recently.
I've decided to give her Rimadyl regularly for about 10 days. If it works then I will continue and have her liver values checked regularly.
I will give her 75 mgs daily, she is 65 lbs.

Happy to hear that she did good on it for 5 years. This really makes me feel better. So there is a possibility that Cilek might do good on this drug.
Half life of carprofen is 8 hours. It has both anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. In this kind of chronic issues inflammation decreases by time (with regular use), on the other hand analgesic effect will not change - to my knowledge. I might need that anti-imflammatory effect more, I don't know. I'll certainly use it regularly.

It's so sad that she had that much pain. Glad that Rimadyl helps her.

Cilek's mood is down, she doesn't want to walk, she does not even try to stand up on her own on slippery surfaces, sometimes even on carpet.
She does not climb the stairs at all. Helping her to climb is not a solution. I'm lifting her and carrying. Not just stairs, sometimes I carry her to grass, put her on the grass wait for her to pee then lift her and bring home. That makes me so sad of course. When she walks 200 meters with me then I'm the happiest person.
