    Pregnant lab.

Hello all, my labby is pregnant. I don't want to bug my vet today as it's sunday. I'm trying to figure out when shell have her pups. I've been told and read alot of contradicting info on temps. Some say 99, others 98, while some say 97 tell when the pups are coming. Well Thursday her temp dropped to 98.2 and was back up to 99.5 the next morning, I've been checking 3 times a day since then and it's been all over the place. Never in the 98 range again. I checked this morning and it was 99.5. Today is day 58. When should I be expecting and what should I be looking for? Btw this is her first litter.

Sunnie was between 98.8 and 99.4, back and forth, the day before and the morning of giving birth. She started whimpering that morning and, seeing how she's an anxious dog, probably kept her temperature a bit higher than it otherwise would have been. This was definitely NOT Sunnie's first litter (we had her 3 weeks at that point and her body looked too well used the first day we saw her for those signs to have been from this specific litter). Seems to me I remember thinking that the pupper's birthday was 63 days from conception....but that's a bunch of hindsight and just going by symptoms as they evolved along the way.

Are you in touch with her breeder? You might get some good information there. Good luck.

(Thank you for giving me a reason to dig out the puppy papers and stroll a bit down memory lane.)

Thanks for the reply. The breeder is on vacation. She said I could call if I needed but I didn't want to bug her just to ask a temp question.

You can find the answer on any "breeding" page on the internet. The temp never stays reduced. Which is why sometimes it's hard to catch or you feel like it never went down enough. Once you see it get to 8-ish, you should see pups in about 24. Even if keep good watch, you'll see the water break too.

Did you do Progesterone testing to calculate the due date? Just curious, because counting days from 1st mating (or whatever) is not accurate at all. I have found that temperatures bounce around that last week, and does a false drop a day or two before the 'real' drop. After that 'real' drop, temperatures return to a more normal 101-ish rather than in the upper 90's, this is what gets my attention, because delivery in now imminent, at least in my case. Day 58 is the youngest viable birth date, if you did progesterone testing and know her due date based off that, so I am hoping that your girl did not go into labor yesterday.

Is this your first litter as well? Will your breeder come help you whelp puppies?
Just watch her for needing to go outside a lot to relieve herself, (both urination, and cleaning out her digestive tract) panting digging, and a far away spaced out look in her eyes. She may want to be alone, or right next to you, or a combination of both, she may eat, or refuse food as she gets closer. This can go on for a few days, so try to be patient, and not hover over her and wear you both out. If yesterday, Sunday, was day 58, then I would expect puppies near her due date of Friday, plus or minus a day, mine usually deliver on day 62, but she could go later because it is her first litter.

    Update if you can.

This is my first litter. The breeder said she would help if I needed it, but I'm pretty confident I wont.

I did not do a progesterone test.

Today I day 59, her temp at 9am this morning was 97.7. At noon it went back up to 98.5
Today she has been digging in her whelping box and has been spending alot of time in there.
Her temp has been up and down since Wednesday. Her lowest aside from today was Thursday at 98.2

Since you do not know her due date for certain, since you didn't progesterone test, there is really no other way to know...

But! That 97.7 is a definite drop. She may deliver 12-24-48 hours from now.

Are you on Facebook? There are several Facebook groups for this type of information, that would be a better resource for you, I can help guide you to them if you would like.

So glad he was was able to join the Facebook group, they supported him, and he did beautifully.
