    Boarding while rehabbing

Just realized that our Lab will be in week 10 of 12 rehab for his TPLO surgery when we have to fly to the East Coast for our Daughter's wedding. Can't cancel or skip this trip! Our regular (non kennel) type boarding facility won't work. I contacted the Ortho Surgeon's office to see if they recommended any facilities - "no, use a family member". Duh, all the family in the area is going to the Wedding! I was hoping they would kennel and do hydro therapy while he was there... Anyone else run into this predicament?

Maybe one of the vet tech's would be willing to help out on the side to dog sit for you. No experience but that would be my next idea, if family couldn't help. Hoping you find a solution!

Do you know any local dog trainers? All of them I know do at least occasional dog sitting in their homes. I would trust my trainer to do the rehab properly. Good luck!

This is not an ideal situation, but I think if you don't have any friends you trust to watch your dog, maybe call your regular vet's office. Ask for hospital boarding, so that he will be in a cage, not a run, and will be watched over better. It'll probably cost more, but you don't want him put in a run where he can do too much.

When my daughter's dog had her bad skin infection, the vet specialty office that was treating her did "medical boarding" for a few days, which was more expensive than regular boarding, but they did it. Someone who works for the vet would be my other suggestion, as Kain's Mommy said. What a situation! Any friends or co-workers who could come stay in your house to dogsit who'd be willing to transport him for his therapy?

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

One option is to try and find a reliable dog walker who also does in house dog sitting. Our current dog walking service also provides in home dog sitting services. It's not optimum having someone else stay in your home, but if you can find someone reliable with with references, it might meet your needs. We found our dog walker on Yelp, so you might start there.

We had a dog going through chemo when my brother got married. There was no way he could be boarded. I asked around and one of the girls that worked at my vet did pet sitting. She stayed at our house and it didn't cost much more than the kennel I use. The dog walker we use now for Sam does overnight pet sitting. They stay at your house 7 pm - 7 am for $80. I think you would have to schedule at least one or two more day time walks though for $18/walk.

Definitely check to see if there is a vet tech that would pet sit for you. Asking at the vet was how I found my awesome dog walker that I used while still working, after Maxx was a year old and stopped going to work with me every day. She also dog sits and my crew adores her. This past winter when I got the flu and then pneumonia and again just recently when I had a really bad case of shingles she was an invaluable help!
