    Unhappy Dogs dying around here

I belong to a neighborhood forum and several people have posted recently about dogs developing sudden inappetence/lethargy/kidney failure/death. A friend I bumped into this morning just put one of his dogs down yesterday from this. All of the dogs have my favorite local park in common for walks. Some have gone into the water, most not.

I asked the park manager this morning if they'd changed the herbicide they use recently or perhaps the person doing the spraying isn't always putting out those little yellow signs. He said they're still using RoundUp and that they'd have to consume a lot of concentrated product to show bad effects. I know that's not true. So....

I'm also wondering about a Leptospirosis outbreak as a possibility. Nothing like eating grass that's been urinated on by an infected fox/raccoon/whatever.

We don't inoculate for Lepto anymore....one of our guys...I think it was Sunnie...had a bad reaction the last time and, anyway, there are different strains out there. The vaccine might not even be adequate.

I emailed my vet to see if he's noticed a trend with something like this or find out if he has any thoughts.

This makes me really nervous. Our guys aren't allowed to eat grass except on our own property but 1) we have foxes/raccoons/groundhogs/etc. on our own property and 2) Bob is unable to adequately focus on what the dogs are doing when he has them out on our street for short potty walks. At least we always wipe feet when they've been off our property....and I won't be taking them to that park for a while "just in case".

Supposedly, all the vets who've seen these dogs have been stymied. I don't know if any of them tested for Lepto.

    Not happy.

i am sorry to hear this sad news. Is there an algae bloom or, conversely, is the water treated?

I guess there have been lepto outbreaks recently. Our vet started vaccinating for it as part of the combo his year.

The Lepto vaccine is useless. It doesn't protect against the majority of strains and immunity lasts for only 6 months.

It could be lepto, but it could also be something else, like poisoning. I'd avoid the park for a while.

They use an algaecide in the lake but not all of the dogs affected even walk to the lake, much less go in it. The park manager said both the algaecide and the herbicide would have to be consumed in concentrated amounts to hurt dogs. Not true of the RoundUp, don't know what the algaecide is.

We stopped vaccinating for Lepto after Sunnie (I think) had a reaction a couple of years ago. Our vets say there's Lepto in the area but our dogs should be OK with their activities/locations. I don't plan on starting up with that again.

I'm guessing that most dogs get this vaccine...maybe even the ones who just died....even if it was Lepto (different strain than vaccination).

And my vet is out of the office until Tuesday. I didn't feel like pursuing this with any other vet at that clinic.

Yeah. We haven't really been taking the dogs to that park on any regular basis....we go to two other parks with smaller lakes/ponds so that we can make an entire loop walk with these two shorter-walk dogs. This is the park I take my morning walk in every day.

How sad. Such sudden deaths. Almost sounds like some kind of poisoning. Archie is not vaccinated against Lepto, we just don't go to highly dog populated areas.

Hope you find an answer. Please keep us informed.

Wow, I haven't heard of any issues near me but that's not necessarily significant. My neighbor with 3 poodles who does a lot of travel for training and obedience competitions would surely have told me if she'd heard of anything like that. Sounds like a suspicious cluster going on there. I hope Sunnie and Danny aren't effected.

Thanks! I'm always really (i.e., anally) careful with my dogs. Kids the world over should be happy I'm not their mother, I think.

I'm hoping for coincidence or something that at least doesn't involve pathogens. I really want to hear what my vet will say. Meanwhile, no one else has posted anything to that local forum I belong to, so I'm interpreting that as encouraging.

How many dogs have died? What were their symptoms before death? Here a couple showed up at different Vets and were determined to have ingested drugs dropped in the parks they visited, marijuana.
