Peeing in bed anyone have any ideas??

    Hi guys,

I have a nurtured 3 year old yellow lab. Sometimes he drips urine in the house, which I think is normal?

But as of recently past two weeks he has peed on the couch twice and in my bed at night twice. It's not a lot just enough to make a good sized mark.

We went to the vet and urine came back negative for bacterial. We do live by the ocean and he swims a lot and plays a lot but he has for years nothin has really changed over last few weeks I feel like.

Hi ~ Welcome to the board.

One thing comes to mind since a UTI is not the cause (and, no, dripping urine is NOT normal):

If your dog is eating too high a protein food, that can cause incontinence....especially nocturnal incontinence. The food doesn't have to be a high protein food...just too high for him. (I had this happen with both of my Akitas...male and female...and all I had to do was change their food to one with a lower protein level.) The test for protein in urine is a specific one....not one that's done with the usual urinalysis.

If your dog all of a sudden was drinking more water, I'd say that was probably the cause. But if he's not drinking more than usual, I'm less prone to think it's that.

If he has dripped urine all of his life, he may have a structural problem or something going on with his prostate.

Didn't the vet want to pursue anything further?

Did the vet talk to you at all about a physical condition? I know canine ectopic ureters are more of a female thing, but there are some conditions that affect males, including hormonal issues. Maybe someone on the board knows what those conditions are called.

It still could be a UTI. Sometimes the testing is inconclusive. Has the dog had a full blood panel? My friend's boxer has congenital kidney issues and had an inverted vulva (she has since received a vulvaplasty and things are better) and one of her issues is frequent UTIs which caused her to pee the bed several times.

If your dog swims a lot, maybe he needs to go out more? Can you safely put in a doggie door? When I lived by a lake and one of the Labs was always swimming, there was lots of urgent peeing going on! He got used to it, or at least his bladder did, but during swimming season he definitely had to go out a lot.

Did he purposely "pee" or is he dribbling urine? Big difference to me. If dribbling, I'd push the vet for more help or get a 2nd opinion.

Rocky dribbled a bit in his sleep when he was young. had some chats with the vet who said it could be control issues. it was never terrible enough to investigate much further and eventually went away.
it seemed to happen on days he has more exercise and was sleeping more deeply.

I haven't talked to the vet as they called me late Friday evening do just say bacteria tests came back negative. But said concentration was low and wanted to check kidneys but night prior he had those checked at an ER cause the bed wetting made me nervous.

The leaking may have been for his whole life I always saw wet spots on couch but figured licking but never saw yellow marks on my bed sheets until these past two weeks.

I don't want to hop on antibiotics unless necessary as he did test positive for Lyme earlier this year and did a cycle and don't want him to build immunity.

Unfortunately I can't put in a doggy door.

Ya I don't really think much has changed. We go for two mile or so walks a day. Then play in the afternoon. Today we didn't play that much but I just got home and he dribbled on couch as I put down white towel to see if he would leak and he did. Maybe about four or so little droplets.

It just seems it's been bad over this past week maybe I'll mention to dr about too much protein in diet. He eats turkey limited ingredient food due to chicken allergy.

Maybe this? But we usually play a lot and we did all summer in the heat as well and he was fine. Much cooler in NH now and playing same amount and seemed to have started. Maybe I'll just walk him for this week and cut out any playing and take away water after 8 and see. But even so he does it during day naps. Not just sleeping at night.

I agree that that’s just not normal and should be further investigated. Hoping it’s nothing serious!
