My sweet Dudley, who will be 13 next month, has just been diagnosed with an enlarged heart. The vet said it isn't good, which by looking at the X-rays I could tell how bad it is. His heart is so large it's pressing on his trachea. He started him on Lasix for the fluid on the lungs. The vet didn't say anything about CHF, so I don't know if that's what he's got or he's heading towards that?
I guess I'm just here to see if anyone has any experience with this? What all can I do to make him comfortable? I don't think he's in pain from this, but his severe arthritis that his whole body is riddled with probably causes him pain. He's on Rimadyl for this, however, but I don't want him suffering.

Our English Springer Spaniel had an enlarged heart but I don't know by how much. The Vet did not say it was pressing on anything but I was told to watch for coughing, especially after exercise. Her lungs were fine though she had asthma and had a lot of scarring on them. She was diagnosed mid life, forget exactly how old, and carried on without slowing down one bit or showing any adverse signs till 14.5. I hope your boy fares as well.

He just started coughing out of the blue one day in July. Not a lot but enough to make you notice. I didn't really think anything of it, but after I got back from vacation in late August, he had what I thought was kennel cough due to me having to board him. It was a lot more persistent. I took him to the vet the next week after I got back and he put him on antibiotics, but they didn't help. That's when we decided to do X-rays yesterday. I didn't know if they could live a while with this condition.
I don't have any experience with this but am sending all good thoughts your way for Dudley's health.
Talk to your Vet. They can live a good long while with this. You may need to modify exercise and be wary of heat and humidity, and extreme cold.I didn't know if they could live a while with this condition.
