    TPLO Plate(s) Removal

    Hi all,

Quinn (2 yrs old) has had 2 TPLO's.....July/16(left) and May/17(right). She has shown weight offset, at rest, for TPLO #1 (1 yr & 3 months ago) since surgery. Almost always she puts her weight on her right leg.....I'm pretty sure this caused the right to tear. Now, her 2nd TPLO has healed and she still has weight offset at rest. Quinn runs and plays well, with no lameness but is mostly in the 'ballerina stance' when at rest.

We have seen the surgeon and Quinn is booked for both plates to be removed next week and check meniscus of 'concern' leg while she is in the joint. Has anyone had a similar experience? Or experienced plate removal?

It is a difficult decision (ack!!) to have another surgery for plate removal, as Quinn is not lame, but I can see the one leg is always bearing her body weight at rest. I don't want her in discomfort after going through 2 TPLO'S. It may be her 'new normal', after surgery, but the surgeon agreed that we should remove plates, look at meniscus and then we have at least resolved the issue if the plate may be bothering her. Also, Quinn is a very stoic, tolerant girl as she used her leg well when she had a 100% tear so not sure if she IS in discomfort while running. She's not a complainer ;-)

    Appreciate any experiences.....

A friend’s dog had to have the plates removed after a TPLO because of a lingering infection. She did very well with the surgery and recovery. Hope Quinn does as well.

my friend had both plates removed (quite a bit after surgery) on her dog (actually teh dg went back a few times, two seperate TPLO's and then meniscus removal and then plate removal)

my personal experience is limited. Penny (my last dog) has TPLO surgery (and meniscus removal) and then had issues with infection pretty much from week 2. we were more or less in line to get the plate removed as soon as the surgery was healed enough (12-16 weeks) but she died before we got there (unlikely it was related ot the surgery - her heart stopped around...8 weeks post op?)

My research has come up with TPLO surgery being one of the highest for infection due to the foreign body (the plate). While many dogs do well and keep the plate, I think quite a few end up taking them out as well. I look forward to the next level in this surgery where they figure out how to reduce infection potential.
