Bubba is a human poop eater, which isn't really a problem unless you live in a city with many parks and high homeless population like San Francisco. It is honestly the one thing I have been unable to train him from. If he takes off randomly and bee lines it away, I know he's heading for human poop and basically all I can do is chase after him. And now I've left SF so it's not as much of a problem

We home senior labs and each and every one of them, at one point or another, was a poop eater. Along came Archie, a GSD, and dang if he didn't do it too. Best solution, pick it up immediately. I've tried several recommendations, none worked more than a day. Vet even suggested a supplement that made their poop taste bad - as if it would not taste bad already. Took Melody to a dog park one time and the entire time she walked around, head down, hunting poop; she was the worse. She knew at home Mom would not let poop lie, LOL.

    appreciate the replies

While it's great to know you're not alone, seems that it boils down to a behavioral issues. And yes, Abby being alpha dog, Lacy follows her lead in everything. Hope I can break this habit she's got. Will let ya know.

I know that having a dog who eats poop is not fun but oh my gosh, all the replies made me laugh... in sympathy.

My beagle ate his poop his entire life (but not poop of other dogs). I tried everything that seemed reasonable. Nothing worked. The only thing that worked was picking up after him immediately. He developed a complex about that and refused to do his business if anyone was too near. His habit was a source of hilarity and resignation for us. If allowed loose in the backyard, he'd take quick looks to the house to check no one was coming out. We literally pruned the yard so we could see him at all times. He was a good sport about it - he'd walk away, let us come near. When we were both equal distance from the poop, he'd race to it which meant we would too. Except half the time I'd start laughing which slowed me down.

When it came to adopting Chloe, I know I threw the shelter staff off guard when one of the first things I asked is whether she ate poop. She didn't.

Boomer, alas, does. His own. I'm just grateful he's not as fanatic about it as Banjo was, so it's rare he gets a chance.

No toys, no kisses for awhile. I usually give him some kibble in water to "clear his palate". His jowls don't hold the smell like Banjo's did. Grateful for that too.

The best way to cure this problem is to "pick up" immediately...then problem solved!

A lot of dogs will simply grow out of this behavior too.

Sam is a poop eater except for when they are both on a raw diet. I'm not sure if the raw diet makes him not want to eat poop or if he doesn't find raw diet poop tasty. Sam doesn't eat strange dog poop. Occasionally he eats his own. I go out with them and pick it up immediately. I do think he has some sort of a health issue, like absorption issues or something, but we haven't had luck finding anything at the vet.

Ugh I feel your pain. Niner eats Charlie's poop and has for 5 years now. I try to pick Charlie's poop up ASAP but they have a dog door and sometimes Charlie poops in the wee hours of the morning. Yeah I closed off the dog door for a time at night and then Charlie barfed all over the new carpet. I can't win. If you find the solution do share.

    Nancy
