UPDATE: Literally before our eyes he quickly went downhill. He went from needing some assistance to getting up then being able to walk around, to not being able to get up and only being able to take a few steps before falling down. We are calling tomorrow to make the "appointment" I am heartbroken and can't stop crying. We took him to his favorite play spot yesterday, one we haven't been able to take him to due to his health. We had a nice picnic with him - got him a cheeseburger and a little ice cream. It was a bittersweet picnic filled with tears. We are putting the Christmas tree up today so I can get one last picture in front of the Christmas tree with him and the other pups.

I'm sorry to hear of his sudden decline. A nice picnic in his favorite spot sounds like a lovely outing. My heart goes out to you.

    I'm so sorry.

I'm glad that you live somewhere where the weather allowed your picnic.

It's nice you got to have that picnic, it's a time you will remember. Try to stay strong for Buster, I know it will be hard to do.

I am so deeply sorry. My heart goes out to you, these dogs really get into our hearts.

The picnic sounded perfect and a nice way to say goodbye, surrounded by favorite things, and a Cheeseburger and Ice Cream!

I will also echo holding it together for him while you let him go.... If you are really upset, it will confuse him, and he will feel like he needs to be there for you, so stay strong, and be there for him, in the present. I had to let a young girl (she was 5) go and it was heart shattering, but I held it together until she was gone. Then I lost it. I scared the vet, until I explained that I needed to be strong for Katy

Regarding 'making the decision' I have always been told, better a few days early, than even an hour too late.
