    my chili doggie limping again

most know chili had elbow surgery as a pup...he started limping again, slow getting up...paw not in air, but favoring. i havent taken him to vet yet but will be doing so next week. my vet surgeon friend didnt say one way or another what to do other than a comment that many dogs dont do well with multiple surgeries. which surprised me as he is a surgeon

chili is 4...so Im not looking for more med work even tho i have full pet insurance.

he walks everyday on leash for 20-45min at his pace...any thoughts would be appreciated.

undecided, he has been limping for few months and has been on fish oil and dasequin for 6 months or more...-img_0618-jpg

    Poor Chili
i know dogs who've had multiple surgeries and did fine (maybe it depends on the surgery). but hopefully he doesn't need any.

    Yeah...I'll just quote Barry here!

His normal walks might just be too much at this point. My Hershey had what turned out to be really bad arthritis in his elbow (diagnosed at 10 at an annual physical). I told the vet that he had no limping as long as I skipped a day between his normal walks (a fast hour...his choice)....so that's what I had been doing. The vet response? "I'm surprised he wanted to walk at all." That made me realize that my penchant for exercise (self and dogs) is not always the best choice. (I remember that with the dogs....with myself, not so much.)

I hope this resolves. Be sure to ask about management tools. I ice Oban every day and he gets acupuncture and/or cold laser about once a month. He's also on several TCM preparations which help but are geared more to his gut. The Ortho Rehab Vet would like Oban to walk only a half hour at a time and on leash. But I noticed he is so pent up, raring to go, that he gaits funny on leash and actually limps more after. So he is off leash.

Aw, sorry to hear. I don't have front end experience but I'm sure gaining experience on back end issues. Good thoughts your way.

I have been thinking about taking hime back to the animal hospital that did his surgery that was all bills would be at same place for insurance vs taking him to local vet and pay cash.

My understanding is that surgery for elbow dysplasia is not usually completely effective, and that most dogs will still have trouble down the road, although perhaps not as much as without the surgery. Scully had bad elbows, although she wasn’t diagnosed until she was about 6 or 7. We managed it with pain killers, gentle exercise, and acupuncture but one she started showing signs of a problem, it never really went away.

I guess for your boy, the question is what exactly is going on - if there’s a piece of cartilage broken off in the joint, then perhaps surgery might help, but if it’s the beginnings of arthritis then there’s probably nothing that surgery would be able to do.
