    Torn pad question

Cookie managed to tear a small flap on one of her pads on her front leg. It’s the one up on her wrist though, not one of the ones she walks on. I cleaned it up and put some neosporin on it. Do you think we should wrap it as well or leave it? There’s kind of a flap of skin hanging off which I sort of glued back on with the neosporin. I’m figuring that will eventually come off (leaving raw skin underneath) but for now it’s sort of protecting the wound.

    Thoughts?

I think if it is larger than say 1/4" square, I would wrap it or cut it off. Larger than that I would wrap it as it would probably mend back on to the pad.

    Neosporin is GOOD stuff!!

Poor baby! I've never done this myself, but a friend of mine who does a lot of waterfowl hunting carries super glue in his dog first aid kit to repair torn pads in the field. He swears by it. I'd call my vet before I did it just to make sure it's ok.

Yeah, I was thinking super glue also but I've never done it either. They use something basically like super glue on humans but the product, ?dermabond, has some advantages over using super glue or krazy glue. It looks like Vetbond is used on animals but I don't know where you could get some aside from ordering it and by the time you got it you might not need it any more.

Yeah ... supergluing it would make me nervous - what if it trapped some infection in there? For now we’re letting her be, but I did pick up some vet wrap in case it either starts bleeding again or we need to keep her from aggravating it. I figure we’ll clean and neosporin it again later and decided about the wrapping. I couldn’t find any vet wrap in the house, anyway so did pick up some to have the option. I took a closer look when we were cleaning her up and she managed to get a small cut on the other side (same place as well but at least that one isn’t as bad). No idea what she did ... probably skidded into a bumper on the frozen ground but I didn’t notice her doing that.

with my Cookie's torn paw pads, what I used to do is keep them clean and put a doggy boot on the paw when outside. I never glued them, stitched them or anything like that.

I ended up wrapping it at least for now because it was still kind of oozy and she likes to get up on the couch, LOL. We’ll check it again later ...

I actually ended up checking all the dogs and they all had torn up wrist pads, but hers were the only ones bleeding. Guess bumpers on frozen ground is rough! Can’t say I’ve ever noticed a problem before, but honestly, if they weren't bleeding I’m not sure I would have noticed.

I carry dermabond in my field gear bag, but only for clean cuts that I can disinfect and glue and dress, human and canine.

A torn flap on the pad, I would not glue it back at this point, like you said it will trap infection underneath and possibly make things worse. Toe pads seem to heal so fast, I usually do nothing, unless they are bleeding. I would trim it off, and keep it clean and dry for now, and watch for infection or her chewing at it. You are doing what I would do :-)

Vetricyn and EMT gel are 2 things I try to keep around now. I have also super glued on several occasions but definitely have to have it sanitized first. I'd probably do the first 2 products followed w/ vet wrap for the pad you are talking about.
