2 Weeks... Not Hungry... Seems Happy

    Hey All,

My yellow lab Toohey hasn't had much of an appetite for the last two weeks. He acts happy, not quite as hyper as usual but by no means has he been lethargic or acting depressed. We have taken him to two vets, blood tests and x-rays show no issues. Neither vet is concerned saying that dogs sometimes go through this stuff, but 2 weeks seems like a really long time for Toohey to eat at most 1/4 of a can of wet food a day....and maybe some of my daughters Cheerios(regular) that she drops as she wonders around the house.

At the very beginning of this he did throw up a couple of times and he had diarrhea, but this was only at the very beginning. The limited bowel movements he's had since then have been slightly soft but still solid.

My wife is pregnant with our 2nd child so I'm not sure if he's off his food because of the crazy hormones floating around the house or what the deal is.

Side note: every now and then he will eat something. He ate a full can of dog food right in front of the 2nd vet (of course his behavior changes at the vet right?) and I've cooked up some eggs for him and he's eaten that eagerly.

I'm just not sure if I should be worrying more or if I should just let him go through this phase, but this dog (like most labs) typically tears into his food bowl and is done in about 20 seconds. Just looking to see if anyone else has had any issues like this.

    Thanks.

I have never had an issue like this, but am sending lab board MOJO your boy gets his hunger back to normal soon. I know it makes you worry when they are off and can not tell you what is wrong. Good thing that all the tests came back good!!

How old is the dog? Have they done any body xrays?

OOps, saw that xrays were done. How about a holistic vet or a second opinion?

Any intact female dogs in the neighbour hood that could be in season. Our guys go off their food when the girls are in heat. Can last two weeks or more.

My last lab didn't scarf his food down. Maybe he just doesn't like his food anymore. I would make him some chicken soup with plain rice and chicken breast.

I'm hoping this is the case. He's an intact male, so definitely possible... I just didn't think he'd keep it up for this long.

Do you give him kibble or just canned? Maybe the manufacturer changed the recipe and he doesn’t like it. Also, did the vet check his teeth for cracks or fractures?

How old is Toohey? How many times a day do you feed him?

Cookie does get miserable about his food when there is a female in heat around, but two weeks sounds like a lot to me.

I'd do a full blood panel.
