Excessive panting.. over 20 minutes of hard play with another dog

Hello, the trainer tonight got me all worried... Sophie seemed to tire and excessively pant after the first 20 minutes of hard play with another young dog. She never stopped panting even though it was AC..; but it seemed warm. I brought her home and bathed her with cool water and she is in her crate. The trainer said she thought it was odd... and since it has been over 90 degrees and now at 90 at 7 pm... is it the weather? She is fine inside our home.. she did fine on the boat yesterday.. she was wet and the breeze in her face was cool. I have noticed the heavy panting.. and yes she is hydrated.. and stays inside all day.. the weather is horribly hot and thick. The other dog.. was not panting like her... but he did not have her thick coat. I am worried and will call vet in am... and it was non stop hard play....
    Thanks,Sophie's mom

Today it was 102 here. Hot and dry. I took Murphy to a park in the afternoon and had him lay down under the shade of a tree while my kids played. He panted the entire time and I even brought water. I wouldn't say the panting was excessive but it was quite noticeable. We didn't stay long. Weather is a huge factor in my opinion. How old is Sophie? Murphy is nine years old so age may be a bit of a factor.

Labs get hot easily. Add playing with another dog and excitement -- well, sometimes it doesn't take much. Especially with heavier and heavy coated dogs. If you are concerned though, you should speak to your vet.

Maya pants a lot more than Sofie and it worries me sometimes. However, it's a new kind of panting and the summer here has been very hot. She stops when she calms down or when she is back where it is cool. Just watch her for a while and see if she pants like that when resting. Panting is how they keep cool and calm down so with the hot weather and playing with another dog...could just have been too much for her at that time!

Kain pants like a crazy man if its to hot or he's had a tough workout. That said he hates the heat, he's like polar bear and would much rather have cold weather.

How's the panting issue with Sophie? Were you able to see or talk to your vet?

How's Sophie? I remember my lab panting when she was about that age and I too was a little worried. It was her first summer- No problems eventuated. Like the other posts, panting is their way of cooling down their body temp.

Granted my boys are 6 y/o and 3 y/o, they are usually panting pretty good after about 10 minutes. I wouldn't have given it another thought unless it was accompanied by shaking legs, excessive mouth foaming....

Maxx pants heavily at any temperature above 75° or so. It can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes for the panting to stop after exercise in the heat. I have had him checked over thoroughly by his vet. His exact words after his thorough check were, "if you were wearing that heavy black coat you would be panting too". Which was the same thing he said prior to the exam! During the warmer months we limit exercise to very early morning, late evening and swimming anytime. To be honest the majority of exercise he gets at this time of year is swimming.
