    She's home

I have been just heart sick since Christmas Eve. I have often told others to be very vigilant at this time of year but did not heed my own counsel. On Christmas Eve I got distracted by a mess I made and my husband put the dogs out after they had eaten. Not 15 minutes later a truck came up the drive and told us that he had hit one of our dogs. It was my precious, sweet 6 month old, Elle.. I spent Christmas Eve at the emergency vet while they worked on her. She had a severely dislocated left femur and possible hair line fractures of the right metatarsals. Unfortunately the vet there could not get the femur head to stay in the socket. So surgery was necessary. On the 26th I took her to a large clinic for the orthopedic surgery. All did not go well, 2 hours into the operation the surgeon called to get permission to do a femoral head Ostectomy which means they remove the head of the femur and a false joint is created. (The ball would not stay in the socket because of the ligament damage and she was afraid to damage the cartilage even more.) They do not do full hip replacements here in Canada. It will be a long road to recovery but she has come through the first stage extremely well. We will start massage and limited movement of the joint exercises. Only out to air and short walks in the house with a sling so she does not put too much weight on the hip.
Tonight was the first night that either myself or my husband have felt like eating so I made a big pot of comfort food (chicken & dumpling) to celebrate Elle's home coming and also that my sister got a good report after her cancer treatment. Maybe 2018 will start on a happier note.

I'm so sorry this happened...at least it sounds like things are beginning to look up, though. All good thoughts from me that Elle will recover uneventfully and quickly (she has youth in her favor).

I hope, too, that your sister will continue to do well.

2017 was dismal for a lot of us...looking forward to a better 2018.

This is my worst nightmare. So sorry Miss Elle had to go through this, and I hope she will make a full recovery (if possible). Thoughts, prayers, and positive mojo sent your way.

OH shoot, I think it's every one of our nightmares! I had an irrigation district worker leave my walk thru gait open this summer. Nearly fainted when I saw it awhile later as I was mowing. I had napped for a bit just prior and left a few of the dogs including my pup, outside.... TG they didn't notice or didn't care.

I did have a rescue lab foster once who had to have FHO surgery. She did great but was not a big girl at all. I think it works quite well w/ dogs 60# or less. Interesting that Canada doesn't do hip replacements...

Oh no. You were lucky that man came in to tell you. Some would not. Good wishes for Elle and all of you.
