      Elle's 2nd post op

Had Elle back to the surgeon today for her second post op visit. She was quite happy with the progress Elle is making. She is bearing weight on the left side when she walks. The staples came out and now we just have to wait for the splint to come off the right side. Stlll on an antibiotic and the pain killers. Getting her to take them is a challenge. She knows they are coming and is becoming very picky. I made her some rice and ground turkey meat balls and that worked for today. Tomorrow it will be ground lamb and rice. Getting her back on to her regular food may be another hurdle as she is becoming even more spoiled.

Sounds like she is progressing well.

One thing I found, they can smell the pills. I would hide it in something then carefully wash my hands before presenting. One more thing to try. It worked for me sometimes.

I'm glad to hear she's recovering nicely. Getting those staples out must look and feel so much better. At least there's an end in sight with the pills. Sometimes you have to get creative with the administration, I hear marshmallows work well for some. Too bad you can't explain why they need them and then they comply although that doesn't seem to work with young kids either.

Next time you are at the vet, ask her to show you how to 'pill a dog'. It is very easy and quick and you know they got the med.

When all else fails we go to that method. This morning there was no problem with the her taking them. A little completion from the other 2 helps her decide I better eat it before someone else gets it. its like feeding baby birds in the nest.

Pill pockets work well for taking meds.

So happy to hear she is making great progress. Samson is a master at spitting pills back out. He manages to eat the pill pocket and still spit the pill out. So I stopped trying and just use peanut butter. Somehow it just works each time.

I remember when Samson got the staples out of his leg after TTA. Huge relief for me knowing he was just one big step closer to full recovery.

How was her more recent checkup? Is she still on the pills?
Trigger will eat almost anything if I dip my finger in peanut butter and then the pill and give it to him with my "flavoured" fingers. He can eat around the tiniest pill in his bowl

We go tomorrow for her final appointment with the surgeon. She has been doing very well. In fact too well. She now wants to go up and down stairs on her own (a big no no, caught her up on the bed this morning, she got up via the hassock at the foot I lifted her off). I made the mistake of giving her a raw hide without checking where it was made, it came from Cabela's so I should have known better. Anyway we were out a 3:00 this morning so I got to see the super blue moon, it was really clear here. After tomorrow we will start therapy in Alandale. I know a few people who have used them and give them really high marks. She has two more months on leash walks and crate confinement, only out in the house with supervision. She has started to want to play with her toys. I have the material for a snuffle mat all cut. Keeping her occupied will be the challenge. The only med right now is Metacam. It is going to be at least 5 months before we know what her limitations may be.
