Poor baby. I had heard that the vaccine is not very helpful though-anyone know how well it works?

When Lola came down with the flu symptoms, my first thought was to come back to the forum, to search for information about the dog flu.

We’re at day 6 since Lola came down with flu symptoms. You’re right...this thing has been a bear! We all finally slept last night!

I’m happy to say that Lola ate two meals today, after refusing food for almost two days (she ate a little sweet potato and and a couple of biscuits in between). One saving grace, was that she drank a little water when she wasn’t eating.

Our vet has been great, calling twice a day to talk about any potential changes and adjustments to her meds.

Lola is snoring right now, which is music to our ears.
That is great news she is eating better and yes when they can sleep more than 4 hours without having a coughing/phlegm attack (as I called them) it was a sign with ours they were getting better/on the mend. Our older Lab at the time had a milder case and was pretty much symptom free after 14 days. However, our younger Lab who had it far worst than our older Lab had a lingering mild cough for about a month with occasional phlegm, so just a heads up.

On Thursday of last week, the doggie day care center that we go to notified customers that they were going to be temporarirly closed due to the flu outbreak. I had also taken to Lola to the beach a day before doggie daycare. Between the beach and doggie daycare, Lola came down with the flu.

On Friday, we started to see symptoms of the flu in Lola. The symptoms started to accelerate on Saturday. The two vets that we go to (our regular vet and the 24 hour emergency vet) had just heard about the flu outbreak. Our vet came out to our car, as they didn’t want to risk spreading the flu to other dogs.

On Saturday, our vet prescribed an antibiotic, and Tramadol for the cough. We went back to the vet yesterday, because Lola’s cough was worse on Saturday night. The vet prescribed Lomotil, and told us to put the Tramadol on hold for now.

At this point, Lola is having coughing fits about ever hour, and continues to cough up clear phlegm. She normally sleeps in her crate, but we brought her in our room last night. It’s been a tough couple of days watching her struggle with this. She seems a little better this morning.

Thank goodness she continues to eat a little and drink water.

Our doggie daycare/kennel only requires Bortedella. After this outbreak, they may suggest (or require) the flu vaccine as well. Right when we heard about the flu outbreak, we talked to your vet, and Lola got shot #1 of the two part flu vaccine. Unfortunately, it was enough time to give her some immunity to figh it. Lola is scheduled to go in for the second shot in about 3 weeks.
I am really confused by your post...

So, Lola came "down with the flu", after being exposed one day before, the incubation period for the canine flu(s) is/are 2-4 days, so that is virtually impossible. The canine flu is also a virus, so antibiotics do nothing to treat the flu, unless there is a secondary bacterial infection. Tramadol is a pain medication, not a cough remedy. If she is still coughing hourly even with the Lomotil, after three days, you might want to ask for a different cough medicine or a suppressant, instead of a bronchodilator.

So Lola got the flu after one vaccination, and they still plan on giving her the second vaccination?
I would get a second opinion before giving the second vaccine, since she has been sick with the flu already, she should have natural immunity now, since she has had the disease, and vaccinating her again could really mess with her immune system. It's like giving the Chicken Pox vaccine after a child has had the disease, is makes no sense.

I have been doing my research and the bivalent (H3N8 and H3N2) flu vaccine is very effective, for preventing these strains of flu in dogs. I have arranged with my vet to purchase both doses for all my dogs from my vet to administer at home, since the canine flu has been confirmed in San Jose, about an hour south of me. I have chosen to vaccinate since I show my dogs, and I have youngsters and a senior here who are at the most risk. So those on the fence about vaccinating, speak to your vets, my reproductive vet and regular vet, both recommended it, along with a few veterinarian friends of mine. The vaccine is two injections given 3 weeks apart.

All of mine were vaccinated last summer after an outbreak here on the East coast. A friend from our training group who is also a vet ordered a bunch and offered it to all who wanted. My regular vet hadn't mentioned it until I was in for something and saw someone new to the practice who had just moved up from FL, and was there for the horrible outbreak they had last winter. She suggested that I have it done since I show them, and was pleased that I was aware and had already taken care of it.

Good luck! Grizz was in the vet's last night for what I was hoping wasn't the flu. Just a mild case of viral bronchitis. No meds. Not even supposed to give cough suppressant. So he's taking vitamin C and Echinacea for his immune system.

Hi SC DOUG! How is LOLA?

We are in Mtn.View, CA Charlie got the Flu as well. Vet said supportive care and don't bring him in as it sounds like the flu and there are no meds to be given.. and he seemed to do better after a week; It was the strangest thing, as even though he showed symptoms of the flu, lethargy, cough - he still had an appetite. Then this past Wednesday, we went to ER because he was panting, refusing food and had fever and he turned out he had pnomenia.

Wednesday was the scariest moment ever for us!! Charlie had chills, he was given antiobiotics through catheter and was discharging thick mucus through his nose. Of course being in the ER vet and dealing with a new vet, that added stress. I laid next to him on the floor while he shivered
I questioned myself that evening if I should have insisted in taking Charlie in to the vet - they kept saying there really aren't any meds. To be honest he coughed the first 3 days and it subsided. We were given 7 days worth of antibiotics and will see our regular vet once that is completed. When we were in the ER they did the Flu panel test ($190!!!!) and it came back negative. But this was day 10 since he got sick. $1200 later....... but doesn't matter as he felt better that evening.

The flu is caused by a virus, so there aren't any meds to treat it. Antibiotics are given to treat secondary bacterial infections (pneumonia) such as your boy had. Some vets may give them prophylactically but given them in the absence of an actual bacterial infection is how antibiotic-resistant infections are created, so I think you guys did exactly the right thing - supportive care and got help when something clearly changed. Hope he's all better - this flu is scary stuff!

Here's a great natural anti-flu/cold/KC remedy that really works. Ursa loves the taste! We humans use it as well.
Nin Jiom - Pei Pa Koa - Herbal Cough Syrup - Natural Cough Syrup

A few months ago both girls came down with KC and in went CS (colloidal silver - great immune system booster) 2X daily and Nin Jiom, and 2 days later all was better.

Hope your pup is feeling better by now.
