Canine flu outbreak in the SF Bay Area - Lola has it

    Hi All,

It’s been a long time since I visited the Lab forum.

Lola is now 5 1/2 years old, and has grown into a beautiful, healthy, and active girl.

Over the past couple of weeks, the K9 flu started to quickly spread throughout the SF Bay Area.

Vets, pet owners alarmed by spread of 'dog flu' in South Bay - SFGate

On Thursday of last week, the doggie day care center that we go to notified customers that they were going to be temporarirly closed due to the flu outbreak. I had also taken to Lola to the beach a day before doggie daycare. Between the beach and doggie daycare, Lola came down with the flu.

On Friday, we started to see symptoms of the flu in Lola. The symptoms started to accelerate on Saturday. The two vets that we go to (our regular vet and the 24 hour emergency vet) had just heard about the flu outbreak. Our vet came out to our car, as they didn’t want to risk spreading the flu to other dogs.

On Saturday, our vet prescribed an antibiotic, and Tramadol for the cough. We went back to the vet yesterday, because Lola’s cough was worse on Saturday night. The vet prescribed Lomotil, and told us to put the Tramadol on hold for now.

At this point, Lola is having coughing fits about ever hour, and continues to cough up clear phlegm. She normally sleeps in her crate, but we brought her in our room last night. It’s been a tough couple of days watching her struggle with this. She seems a little better this morning.

Thank goodness she continues to eat a little and drink water.

i hope she feels better soon! Our kennel requires the bivalent vaccine for the canine flu for all the dogs who come in for boarding.

    Thanks.

Our doggie daycare/kennel only requires Bortedella. After this outbreak, they may suggest (or require) the flu vaccine as well. Right when we heard about the flu outbreak, we talked to your vet, and Lola got shot #1 of the two part flu vaccine. Unfortunately, it was enough time to give her some immunity to figh it. Lola is scheduled to go in for the second shot in about 3 weeks.

So sorry for Lola! It has been prevalent around here for several years and the vaccine is recommended. Even the breeder we got Katie from vaccinates her dogs because they go to shows and it has been spreading around.

    Sending healing prayers.

I'd never heard of Lomotil being used as a cough suppressant before, had to look that one up. Learn something new every day!

So sorry your pup caught the dog flu. Both of our Labs got it at the same time a few years ago when Chicago had that major outbreak. They got it from boarding at our vets of all places. It was the one of the worst 10 days both my DH and I have been through. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies dog. I hope she recovers quickly and hugs to you because I know how difficult it is to watch them go through it.

Thanks so much for the good thoughts Stephveda! Lola had a tough start as a puppy, as we tried to find the right food, and understand her food allergies. This forum, and all of the members here were a godsend at that time, providing us with great advice.

When Lola came down with the flu symptoms, my first thought was to come back to the forum, to search for information about the dog flu.

We’re at day 6 since Lola came down with flu symptoms. You’re right...this thing has been a bear! We all finally slept last night!

I’m happy to say that Lola ate two meals today, after refusing food for almost two days (she ate a little sweet potato and and a couple of biscuits in between). One saving grace, was that she drank a little water when she wasn’t eating.

Our vet has been great, calling twice a day to talk about any potential changes and adjustments to her meds.

Lola is snoring right now, which is music to our ears.
