    Rimadyl not helping?!

Cookie was doing great, then mid last week he started limping slightly on his left front leg (elbow arthritis).

I put him on Rimadyl expecting he'd feel better the next day.

Well, 5 days later, he was getting worse and worse each day, he almost didn't bear any weight on the leg.

I called the vet and she told me to put ice for two minutes and a warm towel for a minute. Repeat 3 times. Do it 2-3 times a day.

Two days later he is doing much better.

I still don't believe it that Rimadyl did nothing. I might as well stop poisoning him with NSAIDs for good.

    Any similar experiences, ideas?

Sunnie really perked up when we put her on rimadyl (actually, she's getting Rovera..same stuff but cheaper).

Glad to hear the ice/warm is helping!

Rimadyl does not seem to work for Asher's front left elbow. I told my vet that the limp doesn't get better on Rimadyl. I even discussed other NSAIDs for him and he said if Rimadyl wasn't working, he wasn't convinced others would. He said I could try Tramadol but I didn't want to do that since the limp isn't awful and doesn't slow Asher down. I'll ask the ortho when we go for Asher's CT scan and consult for his elbow dysplasia on March 1. I think I will get out the tumeric and try golden paste on Asher. I'll also start him on Ester C. I'll wait until after the ortho visit and any surgery he may need.

For Samson - Rimadyl has always worked for his knee.

poor cookie, hope he feels better soon.

there are various ways to tackle pain, sometimes it takes a few together to get anywhere.

Rimadyl was very toxic for Yukon. He's on a new NSAID called Gallaprant on an as needed basis. It's supposed to have much less side effects than other NSAIDS.

Sometimes rest and basic things like ice are the best medicine. As a point of reference, when Yukon hurt his Cspine, all professionals said 6-8 weeks crate rest, MRI, surgery, etc. He improved with conservative treatment and a little PT but it was to the tune of months, not weeks to get there. As they get older, they sometimes need more time to bounce back.

    Hope Cookie feels better.

    Thank you all guys.

I've read about Galliprant on this board but unfortunately it's not available where I live. Cookie did have a reaction to a different NSAID more than two years ago, so I am aware of the side effects. He handles Rimadyl pretty well. However, I am reluctant to put him on NSAIDs long term (it's always been for a couple of days) and in this case where it doesn't work, why should I?

I don't think there are supplements he isn't on (turmeric paste, ester C, vitamin E, salmon oil, glucosamine & chondroitine, collagen, etc etc) but his elbow is an arthritic catastrophe. On his good days he can still go for a decent walk, but these flare-ups have started occurring way too often. People tell me it's the weather and I certainly want to believe so, but I am not sure.

PT and exercises also seem to be helping him. This arthritis is such a frustrating thing.

Poor Cookie! Glad to hear that the ice/heat is working. I try to stay away from NSAIDs if at all possible but sometimes it is a must, like after spay.

Im softy to hear cookie has been hurting. I am glad to hear the heat and ice have been helping.

I personally can not take NSAIDS but I have found that a combination of homeopathic oils on the areas help my inflammation substantially. These are all analgesic anti inflammatories and have worked for me but only when combined and I usually soak and then heat the towel

for a dog id try maybe 1 drop of each in a min of a gallon of water.

    Basil oil
    Lemongrass oil
    Peppermint oil
    Juniper berry oil

Samson has it in his knee. He was on golden paste. I wanted to give him a break from it so he hasn't been on GP since Jun? I haven't seen a decline so I didn't make more. I have been taking him swimming once a week since November. I can tell big difference in muscle tone. Do you take Cookie for walks? If so, how long? Samson is 5. I haven't walked him much at all this winter due to the snow and ice. I find so many differing opinions on how much to walk a dog that has arthritis or HD. Just curious on what you do.

    Hope Cookie feels better soon.
