Great news! I hope it continues to improve. I've been giving Cookie turmeric (golden paste) for a few years now. I don't know if it helps, because he gets other things as well (for his arthritis) but it certainly doesn't hurt.

I didn't know about glucosamine/chondroitin being a problem for dogs with liver problems......I've been giving Molly Cosequin DS for a few years now! Maybe I'd better stop.....She has arthritis, though, so I hope that wouldn't get worse if I stop......she is also on Galliprant for the arthritis pain, but vet knows this, & I don't think she is seeing that as a cause for Molly's liver trouble.....
I've also read where you shouldn't give turmeric with NSAIDs....can cause bleeding problems. (Galliprant's an NSAID, right?) I was thinking Sunnie might benefit from it, too, but she's doing really well on Rimadyl.

Glad to hear that result. You're not too far from normal range ...Yukon had a "marked" 20 fold increase in ALT in 2016 at almost 3000 due to toxicity from meds. It was scary going there for a bit, but he's in the normal range now.

Wonderful news! Hopefully this the numbers will continue to improve.

Sitting here thinking, I remember the day he was born and still think of him as that wee little puppy.

I think someone posted here that turmeric can cause a clotting problem. Cookie is on turmeric basically since I started him on raw back in 2013. So it's been almost 5 years now, we do bloodwork twice a year, and his platelet levels are normal (on the top of the range). I've given NSAIDs with it without a problem, but he is not on them long term.

I'd give turmeric a try, I'd just do bloodwork to be on the safe side.

Hmm. Any thoughts by your vet as to what caused the ALT to elevate? It is usually indicative of leakage of the hepatocytes due to inflammation. The turmeric was a great idea as well as the denamarin (milk thistle derivative). SAMe is also helpful. Congrats.

Thank you, Dr. Thomas. Our vet didn't know...the ultrasound eliminated some nasties but that was the extent to which we tested. Dr. K. said that he has had other patients who just elevated without diagnosis (including biopsy) and without symptoms. He also said that Dan could be reacting to multiple things...things that on their own wouldn't raise flags but in aggregate put his level over the edge.

The glucosamine/chondroitin was the last thing I eliminated (replaced with the turmeric) and so I tend to suspect the bad/good, respectively, relative to Dan, of those ingredients. He has his annual in July and we'll be doing the full liver panel as part of his bloodwork then. Fingers crossed his level might retreat even further. He still has no symptoms of anything wrong (other than his hip acting up...he inherited HD from his mama).
