Poor Sam, hoping he's feeling better. Sounds like an ear infection. Allergy season was hard on our Jake and his ears would be itchy. If we didn't watch, turned into an infection.

    Hoping it's nothing.

Hope that things turn out well. Shadow had horrible infections last summer that finally cleared up with a new bottle of medication (EasOtic) that was easier to apply than the med that begins with an 'M'. It has a measured dose that is applied with a pump motion. The 'M' med has a long skinny tube that doesn't allow you do see the amount coming out, especially difficult if you have a squirmy uncooperative dog that runs to the farthest corner under the bed. My best method with the EasOtic, was to first smear PB on the bottom of his food bowl and then give him dinner to distract. He rarely realized what was going on until I was done and then he got caught up in cleaning up his bowl.

When you go to the vet, mention that you were out at Bull Run/Manassas and have them specifically look for ticks in/around his ears if no sign of infection. I was out in the park several times last summer for work. My 15-30 minute visits resulted in getting covered with dozens of pin-head sized ticks (and yes - I had applied spray and tucked my jeans into my socks). Fortunately, I found them all before they could get comfortable -- except for the big one that I felt crawling in my bra as I was flying down I-66 at 70 MPH. Thank goodness it was early on Sat morning and not too many cars were around!!!

I've always wanted to take Shadow for hikes out there but after that experience, I have been very hesitant.

So, we're back from the vet. Sam's ear had a bunch of dark gunk way down in the ear canal. The vet thinks that is what's bothering him. She put a syringe-like application of medicine down into his ear. It was called BKT ointment. It's an antibiotic/steroid combo. She said it works for 10 days. She also gave us an ear cleaner for use after swimming. I have no idea what the ear cleaner is because the only label on the bottle has her practice name on it. She wants to recheck his ear in 10 days to see if it looks better. Sam was not a happy camper getting his ear looked at. We ended up putting a muzzle on him not because he was being mean but for a distraction. She put it on him and he plopped his butt down and didn't move the whole time she thoroughly examined his ears. Sam is 18 months old now and I have never had any reason to clean his ears. I guess that's going to have to change.

Edited to add: She asked about the droopy face because of something to do with possible tick born paralysis. We do use K9 Advantix II and have really good results with it.

Ok. Yuck! That just gives me the heebie jeebies! We live real close to the Battlefield and take walks/swims there most every weekend. I haven't found any ticks on us or Sam yet. I sure hope I never do!

Was going to say it sounded like an ear infection. He'll heal up now with a good cleaning and medication.

What you described, the ear held lower, is what happens here if there is something going on in the ear. With Archie, instead of his ears being perked up straight, the affected one will go off on an angle. I have no problem cleaning Mardi's ears but Archie is a pistol. Like all his past neglect, I think he must have had some real problems in the past and relates cleaning to pain. The vet and the groomer have noted this. Like you found though, with a muzzle, although he is not being naughty, seems to tell him we mean it has to be done and will be done and he goes with the flow.

Poor Sam! Kain understands the ear struggle! He gets them once a year and man does he buck like a bronco to avoid the ear cleaning! Hopefully Sam's ears clean up quickly!

Glad to hear everything went well at the Vet and just a little ear infection caught early. Muzzle sound like the perfect distraction for Same so the Vet could get a good look. Know all about the discomfort of ear infections. Get them every spring now due to my allergies.

Hoping Sam is feeling better real soon.

I am glad he saw the vet and got some meds. He should be feeling better very soon. Be careful not to over use or clean the ear with the solution from the vet too often. What I have found that works really well is to first thoroughly dry the ear and then wipe out the ears with gauze, slightly damp with the ear cleaner, after swimming. If I notice any brown gunk or head shaking then the ears get cleaned thoroughly to remove the brown gunk and then I squirt the ear cleaner in to the ear and massage them really well. Maxx has not had another ear infection since I started this routine and changed to grain free food.
