    Hammer's Journey with Lymphoma

I don't know if you guys remember me but it has been quiet awhile since I've been on! Hammer is 7 years old now and was diagnosed with Lymphoma 2 weeks ago. He is going back for a recheck at the vet today and I'll the same questions but I was hoping maybe some of you might have some advice.

How do I keep his weight up? Should I change his food and feed 3 times a day?

Why on earth will he only drink water if I add ice cubes?

Should I stick with peanut butter for meds (organic) or switch to pill pockets?

Any advice having to do with Lymphoma really helps! Thank you all in advance and it's good to be back on this board.

Oh heck, sorry this is what brings you back, but welcome back. I have no experience with Lymphoma but I do have experience with sick loved ones, human and pet. And one thing I notice is that smaller meals, more often, are often more appreciated and better tolerated. Not sure about changing food. Most of mine have needed little tidbits to encourage eating.

No idea on the water but if that's what it takes, go for it.

Peanut butter, Cheez Whiz, gummi bear, whatever it takes. I do think a variety helps.

Good thoughts for you and Hammer.

I have no experience. I am really sorry you are dealing with this at the age where Hammer should still be running and playing. Sending good thoughts your way.

Sure I remember you and Hammer. I’m sorry to hear you and Hammer are going through all this.

Sometimes my dog acts like she doesn’t want to drink but refilling her bowl with fresh water seems to help. Dogs can be funny sometimes. Do you think he’s not drinking enough? If so, have you tried putting water in his food to both moisten it and maybe make it smell more enticing?

Whatever works for giving his pills is fine, they sometimes get picky with that, too. Peanut butter, cream cheese, marshmallows, American cheese, pill pockets, anything that works. A glob of peanut butter from a jar may be less expensive per dose than pull pockets or anything specifically marketed for giving pills to animals.

I hope his treatment works well for him.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Thank you all for the help! The vet appointment went well. The prednisone is keeping the lymphoma at bay but she assumes he only has about 5-6 months left. He gained a pound and all of the vet techs were clapping, LOL!

I'll try to keep everyone updated on how Hammy is doing. So proud of my little fighter.

So sorry to hear about the diagnosis. I, too, have used just about anything to get pills down most of which have already been listed. Whatever works.

    Sending prayers.

No experience with that particular kind but when my dogs had problems eating, we did sardines or tuna in water. Not a lot or olive oil on top of regular meals. Mostly the juice. And lots of small meals. Microwaved sweet potatoes as well. Lots of carbs. Almost like treating them throughout the day.

All good thoughts. This stuff is difficult.

Oh, gosh...I'm so sorry to hear this. I remember you...you used to post a good bit and then disappeared. I figured maybe school "got in the way".

I hope you're able to get Hammer eating well. It would be nice if he could prove the doctors wrong and enjoy more quality time than they project.

    Welcome back, you two!

He has been on chicken and rice with his regular food mixed in but the vet said he doesn't need the rice anymore. I'm going to start feeding smaller more frequent meals. Thank you so much!

Yeah, I'm actually in college now for small business management and then I'm off to National K9 to become a master dog trainer.
