Seizures can cause temporary vision loss/blindness, as we discovered with Ursa...

Ursa has epilepsy, she's on daily Keppra and homeopathies as needed. During full moon phases and weather pressure systems, Ursa tends to have focal/petite mal seizures during the nights/early morning hours, and when she does, I immediately give her the appropriate homeopathy, which settles her down within seconds.

She had a focal seizure last weekend and this one caused her some vision loss; as grand mals have in the past. It's concerning to watch Ursa this way and even Opal is concerned about her. Past Sunday evening Ursa refused to go up the stairs (going down was slower than usual), despite our coaxing her with treats, etc. We put her harness on and then finally got smart and leashed her up - as if going for a walk, and then guided her up the stairs. Since Sunday, Ursa has been barred from using the stairs, but in the meantime, we gave her a homeopathic called Eyebright (Euphrasia) 3X daily and after 2 days of it, Ursa's vision loss is getting better and today she felt confident enough to use the stairs again - with us walking beside her. If necessary we'll take her to the ophthalmologist for a recheck.

    Never a dull moment...

I wonder if it's truly vision loss. The griff would seem to run into things blindly but I really didn't think her brain was working at the time. It was on auto-pilot in that post-ictal phase, and if something was in the way, she ran into it. When our Maddy got sick, she didn't have seizures that we were aware of, but one of the symptoms of her brain illness was that we through she lost sight. But after the vet visit, the vet determined the eyes were working but the message wasn't getting to the brain properly. Whatever was wrong, we let her go 6 weeks later.

I hope you guys get some answers. I would never have wanted to lose Wrigley, but those seizures are the worst thing ever I think in all of the dog illnesses out there. We haven't experienced cancer but the being on high alert 24 hours a day every day was HARD.

Oban had a "bad trip" coming out out anaesthesia one time. It looked like he was seizing but the Vet said he was trying to stand up and couldn't. Vet also said he was vision and hearing impaired at the time, which was typical. It was heart breaking and terrifying to see. Oban was plainly terrified himself. I hope Ursa does not have this happen often.

I'm happy to report that Ursa is back to her usual self and going upstairs on her own. She never bumped into things, just had this thing for not wanting to go up the stairs.

I agree, Jen, epilepsy is one of the worst diseases (and I speak from experience, although my last seizure was at least 20 years ago), but cancer is no picnic either. Living on 24 high alert is draining for anyone, but I believe more so for us pet owners since our fur-families can't speak and tell us how they're feeling/doing.

We're still giving Ursa Eyebright for another day and then we'll see...

Thanks for the well wishes for Ursa, Jen and Snowshoe!
