Aw, poor Dozer, poor you! Not fun having to put your pup thru surgery, but I guess we can thank our lucky stars that it is something repairable. Good luck to you both.

    Thank you!!

I found an article online that also suggested that they were looking into a possible genetic component, but lost the article while reading it on my phone when I rushed to get Dozer outside. I am off today and am certainly going to look into finding it again.
I have been in contact with his breeder to inform her of the CT Scan results and to inquire about the health of the other pups. I worked every day since his diagnosis Friday, and haven’t really had any time to speak with her. Once I have I will update further.

Most of the time the ureter enters below the trigone (sphincter) of the bladder instead of in the bladder itself. This allows the urine to bypass the bladder and continually dribble out the ureter. There is no effective treatment as most urinary leakage therapy focuses on tightening the bladder sphincter. The condition calls for surgical repair. The ultrasound for your dog suggests that both ureters are likely involved even though they could not see the insertion of the one ureter. I say this because it states bilateral hydroureter and bilateral renal pelvis dilation. This suggests that there is improper urine flow through both ureters causing a back up of urine, which causes the ureters to enlarge in diameter as well as the renal pelvis in both kidneys. Sort of like a beaver dam backing up a creek, forming a pond. Both ureters are open and flowing with only partial obstruction, likely due to the location at the sphincter/proximal urethra where there is no ability for expansion like the bladder itself. Most likely, both sides will need to be surgically repaired (re-attached correctly to the bladder) to avoid permanent damage to the kidneys due to urine back up (renal pelvis dilation). Sorry to inform you of this but it sounds like no one sat down and explained it to you. My pup had the surgery and did fine. Good luck.
Thank you for re-explaining this to me... nice to see it in black and white and to be able to share your information with my husband and kids.

How old was your pup when diagnosed and treated?? Make it female and were they treated with Laser ablation? Which is what the Specialist is hoping to treat Dozer (depending on what further testing reveals)

I think my Vet did a good job explaining it to me... I think I had a harder time absorbing it all as I honestly thought the CT Scan would come back normal as Dozer seemed to be doing so much better since starting his second round of antibiotics.

What is your thoughts on keeping Dozer on a prophylactic dose of antibiotics until his surgery. He was diagnosed with a second UTI a week after completing antibiotics (negative urine C&S done once first dose completed) I have an appointment today with our vet to go over his treatment between now and his surgery.

Oh, I feel for both you and Dozer! What did the vet say about keeping him on antibiotics until surgery? It makes sense to me, but I have zero experience with this.

Thank you!! The Vet agreed completely, with everything we know is going on we want him in the best shape possible for his surgery. We also extended his Probiotics until his surgery

He is doing okay thanks!! He seems to be in a holding pattern. His incontinence is worse now that he has stopped the Propalin, but knowing it’s the best for his health it’s okay with us. We are managing by keeping him on the ceramic tile and taking frequent potty breaks. I am very lucky my daughter is doing online college courses this semester, Dozer has someone home with him all the time.
We went to a friends yesterday (Cooper and Dozer) and Dozer did great!! No accidents although we went prepared. My friends husband was surprised when I told him about Dozer’s health... he said “you would never know by looking at him”. Dozer really enjoyed the play time, as did Cooper... tired pups when we got home. We are all set to go to Quebec for his surgery..... Dozer’s file has been sent, his CT Scan discs have been sent and our hotel is booked. Now we are just waiting to go....

That's great to hear! Did you post the surgery date? I must have missed it. We go on vacation on 3/29 and come back 4/7. Asher has bilateral ED surgery on 4/12. I'm so nervous but I'm sure he will do great. I'm sure your anxious too so I can really relate to some of what you are going through. A lot of us on here can actually. This is a great forum.

We head to Saint Hyacinthe on April 4, he will undergo more testing on April 5 with surgery to follow on April 6. If they are able to perform the minimally invasive Laser Surgery he hopefully will be able to come home the same night.
I can totally understand how you feel as I am anxious about it all... especially not knowing exactly what they will be doing and how invasive of surgery he will need. We will be thinking of Asher and sending him healing vibes as he undergoes his ED surgery April 12. I am so thankful I found this forum...it definitely has been so very helpful for me. I appreciate the support from everyone!!
