      Lab Breeders

I'm new to this so, bare with me. My Daughters Lab was euthanatized this past March 21st due to cancer. He would have been three this coming April. Of all the Labs we have had over the years, this is the first to have this problem. It has been like losing one of the kids. My Daughter is distraught having lost, in the past three years, her husband to cancer, their 13 yr old Lab to a stroke, and now, Cooper, her puppy, to cancer. I am encouraging her to consider another Lab puppy and wonder if we should consider going back to the breeder where she got Cooper. What would the risks be? I am asking the same of our Vets but would like more input from other Lab owners. Thank you.

Welcome to the board...I'm so sorry that you've had so many horrible things happen, especially so close together. And a three year old dog dying is just plain wrong.

What did the breeder have to say about the type of cancer involved and his/her experience with that line? And do you trust him/her? I'd ask there before talking to the vet. Also, perhaps someone on here might know of the breeder....if you get your post count up (I think to 5), you can send and receive private messages. Posting breeder names in this public area isn't allowed but someone might post here for you to send them a PM to discuss further.

Good luck as you pursue a future puppy!

First off - I am so sorry to hear about what your daughter has had to deal with. As for the pup - What Sundance said. Ask your breeder. If you do not trust your breeder, start a search for a new one. I have stayed in touch with my breeder over the years - I go to her all the time with stuff (not that my boys have a lot of issues - I just like chatting with her). Good luck in finding the next pup. Hopefully you will remain a member of the forum once she gets a new puppy. This forum is a wealth of great information and great members.

It's sad to lose a dog....to old age or to illness.

I tend to be a bit superstitious. I had a Griffon that I got a few years back. She developed epilepsy, something breeders can't test for. She died at about 2 years of age. Even though the breeder offered me a half price dog, even a FREE dog wouldn't make me get a dog from the same breeder.

I don't know if your daughter lives near you but Virginia is right in the middle of some of the best breeders in the country. And in two weeks in Frederick, they are holding the biggest LABRADOR dog show in the world. Maybe it would be a fun thing for you guys to do and check out. Home

I am sorry you and your daughter lost Cooper, way too young.

I'd also be asking the vet if the cancer is of a genetic type. Not all are. If it was just a fluke, and everything else lines up well w/ the breeder, fine but I'd do some pretty heavy homework first to confirm that. Best of luck, and sorry for your family's loss.
