    New Veterinarian

Rocky’s vet has resigned and is moving across the state, as I prepare to interview new doctors thought I would ask what questions you would ask or things to look for around the office, that kinda stuff that we all learned the hard way.
    thanks,

Take note of the office hours and, if you don't have an emergency hospital nearby, ask if there's a vet on call for when the office is closed.

Does someone stay in the building overnight if any dogs are there for health reasons (as opposed to being there if kennel services are offered)?

Are arrangements made if a contagious pet has an appt. (separate waiting area or entrance)?

What insurance is accepted (if that applies to you)?

Google the doctors for background/reviews....especially if the vet is new to the area or in a franchise like Banfield.

    Good luck!

I will likely be testing out a new vet for my next dog.

I would/will ask about their recommended vaccine schedule (I won't stand for yearly) and how they feel on titering. What age they recommend spay/neuter and if they feel there is benefit to waiting beyond 6 months.

Beyond that just how they handle my dog. do they great and give treats to start the sessions? are they using more modern force free vetting practices? does the dog have to be on a table? (Ive never had a lab on a table - Penny did go up though but i could lift her).

oh and I prefer when they do vaccines and such with me VS taking the dog away. I had one clinic that rarely "take the dog away" from me for treatment. I went back with Rocky when they did bloodwork and cuddled him (he was a super easy patient). I mean obviously i can't go back for xray and such, but for blood draw and vaccines no reason for me to not be there.

beyond that if it is a new clinic i'd see what they have in house. it's a balance as a clinic that has lots of diagnosis and tools and fancy things tend to be more expensive to cover all the extra costs. But then you don't have to go to another clinic for other stuff.

I also like a mix of holistic, or things to try before going to drugs when it is appropriate.
