Female Puppies are Prone to UTI ????

As per the BYB and the Vet. I've never heard or read this but I have not bought many puppies. I'm not sure if this was said before the puppy went home but for sure it was after the Vet first saw her for UTI. Did your breeder say this? OR you, if you are one of the breeders here? I guess it's more common in girl dogs than male? But to the extent a warning/caution/explantion is made about it? To me it makes it sound like UTI in female puppies are to be expected.

    Hmmm....

My yellow girl had puppy vaginitis, but not a UTI.

My female Akita had puppy vaginitis, but not a UTI.

Both of my chocolate boys and Danny had UTIs.

(can't include my yellow boy or Sunnie...didn't have as puppies)

I warn my pup buyers about this because my female pups squat very close to the ground. I suggest the new owners give cranberry supps daily to help prevent UTIs. For awhile there, right around teething time (and coincidentally, 3rd set of vaccines), I had a string of UTIs. Of course I have a field and if you understand that fecal matter may contain e. coli, etc, that can get sucked back up if in contact w/ the vulva, you'd understand why female pups would be more prone than males who stand more upright when urinating. Even chewable Vit C can help to keep the urine acidified in such a case. Once the pH rises, it becomes a great breeding ground for the bacteria and then it's vet time. Had a couple guys who didn't pay any attention and their UTIs cost them ~$500 each.

Most the time its vaginitis and not a real UTI, and like Anne said, it's typically due to them squatting low.

Some female puppies can be prone to UTI because they squat so low to the ground to pee, and their vulva hairs are long and act as a conduit for bacteria to enter the urinary tract system. Add in an inverted vulva, (which is curable with a heat cycle or two) and you have a perfect storm for UTI. Boys structure, by peeing while standing gives them much less chance of UTI.

If I have an inverted vulva puppy here, (or sell one on full disclosure), we give cranberry capsules twice a day to acidify the urine, (like Anne said), trim the vulva hair short so it doesn't have that 'twist' to it, and wipe with a baby wipe after urinating, and we rarely if ever have a UTI. My dogs and puppies Love to drink a lot of water, so that might help too.

Las Vegas didn't exactly have a lot of tall cover last time I visited. Gotta have a host for all the "icks".

I don't know that much about canine anatomy, but... think about female anatomy in general: The urethra is shorter. Female humans have a bazillion times more UTI's than men.

    Just saying.
